Runny nose when jogging

I've notice that when I jog, my nose runs. Its just clear, but it's irritating. I try to walk/jog 3.5 miles every morning. It doesn't happen when I am just walking. I just try to remember to take tissue with me. It's not stopping me from jogging, just wonder if others have this problem. Thanks

I get a runny nose every time I exercise (running, lifting weights, biking, anything.) I've never looked into why but I make sure to have tissues handy2
-
I suspect this might get better as you make progress. In the meantime, carry the tissue. If you get to the point where you can run the entire 3.5 miles and it is still happening, go see a doctor. You might have a sinus problem or allergies.
I have known of people who tend to get more of a runny nose when running. But nobody who has to carry a tissue each and every time, or for whom it interferes with running....Course, i know mostly runners. Those other people might have stopped long ago.2 -
I'm 59 years old and a slow jogger. I probably jog 2.5 of the 3.5 miles. I live in West TN which is horrible for sinus sufferers, though I can say I don't have horrible allergies. I'm trying to train to do a 10K next year. No matter whether it runs or not, I'm not giving up. It's a small price to pay.1

Mr. Tim: Just another question. It was cold to me this morning around 43 degrees. What do you do to help keep your ears warm? Helpful advice welcome. Thanks2

Is your nose running in all weather conditions or just in cooler weather? Mine runs clear when I exercise outside in cooler weather, but I'm usually wearing long sleeves and just wipe it on my sleeve3
-
Even the last few weeks when it was relatively warm here, in the 70's it was running. I do that too and it's enough that when I blow it out and shake my hand it slings off. (Sorry for the grossness)

It's gross but it's what I do too. My nose runs when running in the cold.0 -
It's just one of those things, I had it tonight on the bike. There's probably a scientific reason to do with temperature and humidity but as far as I'm concerned it's either a wipe with the glove or good old 'snot rocket' and forget about it.0

I think it is great you are running. I hope you keep it up.
I have never really had much trouble with my ears. When I run, everything warms up quite nicely, it seems. But I did live and run in Minnesota for a number of years, in the winter too. I wore a ski cap for my head and ears. But, as I said, unless it was really cold (below 0 degrees F), I did not have much trouble. I was bundled neck-to-toe and that was enough to keep my head warm.0 -
I carry a handkerchief at all times. In the summer, my nose only runs a little. When it's cold or windy, it's non-stop. It doesn't get better with experience. For me, it happens both running and walking.
As to ears, in moderately cold weather I wear a fleece headband. If it's really cold I wear a fleece or wool hat. Lightweight gloves are a necessity for cold weather. You can put them in a pocket after you warm up.0 -
My nose runs constantly when running. I've run for two years now, getting up to marathon distance, and it's not any better than when I started. Wiping my nose makes it sore so I have to use the snot rocket method. Fine for most runs as I train in the wilderness at 5am, but I really have to reign it in on races....1

Sounds as though you're suffering from allergic rhinitis.
Have a couple of neighbours who run the same trail my sis and I do, who wear face masks for allergies. They look much like half face ski masks look - Does it work? I don't know.
ETA: If it does start to bother you, make an appointment with an ENT Specialist.1 -
I had the same question the other day ,so i looked it up.
" In the cold weather, your body produces more mucus to warm the air and moisturize your membranes, protecting it from the cold, dry air. This additional mucus acts like flypaper.
Any debris from the environment, such as bacteria, viruses, or other small foreign bodies, are stuck to the mucus and either swallowed or drip out your nose.
The action of capturing and removing foreign objects helps protect the delicate tissue in the air sacs, or bronchioles, in your lungs from being damaged. Instead, the dust particles and germs are swallowed and destroyed by enzymes in your stomach or leave when your nose is dripping.
The second reason your nose drips in the cold air is related to simple chemistry and physics. As you breathe in air, your body heats the air. When you exhale warm, moist air is released into cold, dry air. The reaction between warm and moist air with cold and dry air produces droplets of water.
You can see this same phenomenon in your shower at home. As you take a hot shower, droplets of water often form on the bathroom mirror, as a result of mixing warm air generated by a hot shower and cold air in the bathroom.
Droplets of water form near the end of your nose when the warm air from your lungs meets the cold air outside. Then gravity takes over.
These water droplets may mix with mucus and begin their journey out of your body. Unfortunately, no amount of sniffling will keep them from exiting, because the droplets form too close to the end of your nose."

When I used to jog frequently, I was often tempted to roll up tissues and wodge them up my nose to stop the CONSTANT DRIPPING.
Drove me crazy.3 -
sleve, glove, hem of shirt, or snot rocket all work about the same I can usually suck it in and spit it out along the road tends to leave me with less mess.
I almost never need to cover my ears as they seem to act like a radiator in the cold.
I've found a super cheap pair of gloves made of the same fabric as sweatshirts that are perfect for running and I don't mind throwing them through the washer every few days and if I take them off and tuck them in a pocket if I lose one its no big deal.0 -
Ugh, so annoying. Yes, when it's cold my nose runs. I just take tissues or stop at the public bathroom on the trail to blow my nose. I think it's just my nose trying to insulate it self from the cold.0

Happens to me everytime I run. It doesn't matter if it's hot and humid or cooler. It was happening when I was staring out with C25K and still continues when running 8 miles. I carry tissues in my Flipbelt or use arm sleeve of my shirts. Now, that the weather is cooler long sleeves are convenient for blowing my nose or providing easy access to tissues in the sleeves1

Google exercise induced rhinitis...it's pretty common...I have three pairs of cycling gloves so that I can rotate them due to needing to wash them after every ride due to trails of snot...2
-
I am fine in the summer but when cold weather rolls in I slide two or three tissues in my pocket for my runs.0
-
Always. Even when it's warm. Long sleeve and gloves are good. When it's warm, I probably lift the tail of my shirt to wipe (or even BLOW) my nose every quarter mile or so. Gross, but whatever. It comes out in the wash.
When it's HOT, and I run in just a bra, there's really no solution. I tried tucking some tissues in my bra once to take with me, but that ended up a sweaty, soggy, snotty mess.
I've said I'd get some old-school hankies. For years, I've said I'd get some old-school hankies. Still haven't done it. Probably never will.1 -
It only happens to me when the temperature starts dropping. Nice to see I am not the only one using a sleeve2
-
It's a very common problem, there are days that my nose runs faster than I do.....5
-
Yup. Just when I run. A while back, I started non stop sneezing about 10mins after each outdoor run but not inside. I take an antihistamine daily now, which fixed the sneezing. I always have to carry tissues to.0

Yep...I am a sleeve or collar wiper, as well (only when exercising, mind you)0 -

Not for me it hasn't gotten better. I get a runny nose from all exercise like jemhh. No matter what I'm doing -- lifting, running, walking briskly -- my nose always runs. In fact, the fitter I've become, the worse the problem gets.
It also runs no matter the weather, and indoors or out.0 -
With the cold weather comes a very low humidity (a lot of the time). This is one of the main reasons why a runner will experience constant, clear nose running during a run.0
-
yeah, it's normal. That's why a lot of cycling glove have a soft towelling part for you to wipe your nose on. Luckily the worst of the snot dripping happens in winter when you're likely to have gloves to wipe it on. In summer you have to go for the 'invisible handkerchief' technique.0
