Why am I not losing weight?

Hi my name is Alyssa and I am a 18 year old female. I weigh around 205 pounds and I am 5"7. I've been an athlete my whole life so I do have a good amount of muscle on me. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) two years ago. Basically this means my body likes to store every bit of carbs I ingest as fat. To compensate for this, I take several medicines to battle this effect as well as eat a low carb and high protein diet. I go to the gym everyday for anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3. My general workouts include weight training and occasionally playing volleyball. On a daily basis, I eat around 1,200 calories and I drink a decent amount of water. Despite all of this, I cannot lose weight and I'm not sure why. Since going to collage, I've lost around 35 pounds in fat and gained around 10 back in muscle. If someone could please tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi there. Are you using a food scale to make sure your intake is accurate?0

How's your logging? Do you use a food scale for all solids, measuring cups/spoons for all liquids? Use the recipe builder? Use accurate entries? Weight loss is all about the calorie deficit.0

Well, first off, you spelled collage wrong. That's scary. Also, why the heck are you in the gym for 1.5-3 hours?? What could you possibly be doing for that long? And every day for that long, too? Something is not right with your diary. Open it up for other's to see if you want their opinion.

Your profile says you're 20, and you say you're 18. Logging and weighing your food on a digital scale will answer your question.2

Thoughts that popped into my head when reading your post:
* How are you calculating your calories eaten? Are you weighing solids, measuring liquids with a measuring cup/spoon, and logging them using verified nutrition info such as that on a food label held in hand or nutrition information from the USDA Nutrient Database?
* What year are you in college? Your profile says you are 18, which makes me think you are a freshman. There's no way you've lost 35 lbs of fat and added 10 lbs of muscle in the past 3 months. This confuses me.
* Your summary of PCOS is wrong. Women with PCOS can eat carbs and lose weight. I speak from personal experience. You may find that eating fewer carbs is helpful but that does not mean you need to eat very low carb or very low calorie. I ate around 75-150 carbs/day while losing 50 lbs. My most recent reading (Lyle McDonald) has suggested .6 grams of fat per pound of bodyweight plus 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of carbs per pound of bodyweight as good places to start for women with PCOS.
* You are eating more than 1200 calories. You can't maintain 205 lbs on 1200 calories. I can't tell how many calories you are eating but it's definitely more than 1200.10 -
1200 calories is not remotely enough to sustain someone of your size, age and activity level. So, something must be off in terms of logging your calorie intake.
How do you determine the 1200 calories? Do you log drinks as well as food? Do you estimate portions or do you weigh your food? Do you eat out a lot (often restaurant food has more calories than you'd think)? Do you eat the same amount every day or do you have "cheat days"? Do you log alcohol?
You need to raise your calorie goal to an appropriate one for your size and activity level, but we also need to figure out what's going on with your logging.
I plugged your stats into scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ and it estimates a calorie burn over 3300 cals/day for you and recommends eating almost 2700 cals/day for aggressive weight loss. Even if the PCOS makes those numbers a little high, 1200 is way way way too low.5 -
Perhaps you should consult with a doctor or a nutritionist?0

Not to be mean, but you say you've lost 35 lbs in weight and gained 10 lbs of muscle. That's a pretty significant weight loss. I guess I don't really understand the problem?5

all of this...how do you figure you have lost 35lbs of fat and added 10lbs of muscle in the last few months...absolutely didn't happen...why are you at the gym 3 hours per day - what are you doing in that time?? and others have said, no way you are eating 1200 calories per day.3 -
I read your post, and I'm confused as others are why do you work out for 3 hours? If you are as active as you say why aren't you eating more food?? See a doctor thanks.1

She says she's an athlete. I'm assuming the 1.5-3 hours/day at the gym are training for her sport.1

but an athlete would not be eating 1200 calories per day...8 -

Agreed. Hence my first post (in which I estimated her daily calorie burn).1 -
OP, can you please open your diary and explain how you determined you lost 35 lbs of fat and 10lbs of muscle? Also what exactly is the problem? If your weight loss has stalled, how long has this been going on? We really need this info to give you any useful suggestions.0

For some reason I didn't get the impression that she is on a team right now. Who knows. There are plenty of people (especially young women) who are active and undereat, resulting in serious long term issues. This is tricky since the OP is overweight. I think it's clear that she isn't eating 1200 but she may be undereating for her size and activity level, which is indirectly leading her to burn far fewer NEAT calories than expected and thus stall out. Hopefully she comes back and fills in the holes a bit so we can provide better advice.3 -
I dont get it, You ask why but then tell us exactly why, And follow it up with oh but i have been losing weight?1

My best advice is for you to head over to bodybuilding main webpage and browse through their motivational articles or free meal plans. Everything from carb cycling, bulking, cutting and proper dieting can be found on their website. If you would like me to suggest a diet program, the 3 week diet is a good one. You will be put you in a caloric deficit to lose weight and you should have no trouble sticking with it since its rather short term. You can learn more about it here, reviewyu.com/3-week-diet-program-lose-20-pounds-21-days. I would also suggest you buy food high in fiber, they take longer to digest and will keep you feeling full.
