Whilst chit chat is meant to be fun..Ive noticed a number of threads collapsing into blood baths...
Are we becoming less tolerant?
Should we run people off with different perspectives or Leave them be?

Whats your take on it ?

Every posters post is valid to them ...
Please keep it friendly..

I think we should circle around people with different perspectives. Very friendly, indeed.

Pack mentality. That's all it is. When people first show up here and post tentatively and in an introductory way, they're generally looking for acknowledgment and acceptance. Some find it, some don't. Like anywhere (schools, churches, workplace, neighborhoods) alliances are made and groups are formed.

When the responses get sharky and the circling begins here at MFP, it's noticeable that the same groups travel together and respond en masse in a thread, especially when the OP shows vulnerability or is new. There are plenty of winks and nods and elbowings that reference, in coded language, conversations that are had on walls, private groups and in PMs.

It ain't pretty but it's conventionalist conditioning and more the rule than the exception pretty much everywhere. Individuals who don't align themselves with clicques and packs don't seem to dog pile in the same way.

Anyhow, that's how I see it.

Great thread topic by the way. It should get interesting.

Yeah..I get what you are saying..

There's more than one reason why I refer to this place as "The Playground".

I think newmeadow nailed it. I've frequented other forums in the past and seen the same thing. For some reason it's much more difficult to simply not participate, or not type that reply...

I dunno - I'm here to have fun, learn about fitness etc - but I always always keep in mind that it "Isn't just the internet" which was another posters excuse on another forum. There really are real people typing in those words! Some of em are pretty awesome if you give them a chance.

Exactly ..there are real people typing in the words..tbh I've seen totally absurd posts ..but they are entitled to their opinion. I sometimes wonder how a person who maybe a little fragile deals when they feel harrassed or attacked....is this cyber bullying? ...I know its the internet and people should expect all types on here ..but some people don't expect what they get ...does that mean they don't have a right to be here?

    Its an interesting question?

If I'm honest I can be one of the people you describe..not through malice but more through either sharing my own opinion on something or just humour and honestly nothing I say in the forums should be taken seriously, I forget myself sometimes. I've learned that in order to actually know people here, you get to know them on their FL, it's a different world there.

    Also, I'm a unicorn with a BMW 2021.

I always knew you were unique..obviously a unicorn lol

It is interesting. I see posting on most forums as a privilege more than a "right" I guess, as it can be revoked if certain lines are crossed, but that certain level of anonymity the net provides seems to invite some folks to step over that line.....

Dunno, I can only really police myself when it comes down to it, and I like the "treat others as I want to be treated" formula. :)

Yup, there is a lot of cyber-bullying in some threads, especially when the OP questions a sacred cow, and forgets that this is the internet, not real life. other than nutrition and fitness threads i expect sarcasm and to deal with people who use their posts as self-validation.
Some people have crappy lives and abusing their fellow members makes them feel better, i accept that and move on. Other folks, particularly young people, new people to forums, think they are special snowflakes and every idea they have is the most wonderful concept in the universe, when the shark feeding frenzy happens to them it is sad... often they simply do not know better.

I've had the frenzy set on me elsewhere. Just :) and move on, but I have seen others get fairly well ripped to shreds.

The fact that (in my humble opinion) the decent folk far outweigh the bullies keeps me coming back.

If someone told me 30 years ago I would enjoy morning coffee one day while chatting with folks from around the globe...let's value it.

Piranha is more like it. LOL

I live by: Snarky is as snarky does.. It clearly says on my profile that I am "blunt and to the point but never meant out of snarkiness".. Sometimes the joke points back you (meaning me) and sometimes you have to save yourself or be eaten.

I am in and out of Chit Chat and the main forums daily, I pick a choose the threads i want to participate in and ignore the ones I don't. Sometimes there is controversy within a thread.

Chit Chat is not meant for certain topics, for the more serious personal needs, there is Motivation and Support.

But who decides what topic is chit chat worthy?
Thats what Im saying can't people post what they want and we just not post if we have nothing positive to say on the subject..

Even if someone say new posts a heavier topic in chit chat ..does it really matter?
Lol..I hadn't thought of the piranha analogy ..fits too ;)

We don't decide. But the audience you attract by where you post does.. That's not my rule..

Let me go one step further, its not just here in Chit Chat.. this stuff is all over the main forums too.

Its one big play ground. I bring my pail and shovel to the sandbox and try to play well with everyone. Sometimes people just don't play well with others..

I was caught in a thread where this happened, it was not about me or that I did not play well with others, it was the poster (as in the other way around).. I cannot dictate or even predict a particular outcome.

Yeah..I know there are some controversial topics posted ..but we can choose to not participate ..is what Im saying ..
I know what you mean though.. ..there are also posters who deliberately bait and inflame situations ....

Not at all. There've been some heavy duty chats in here over the years that have flourished and they've been memorable. They're usually taken down eventually due to controversiality, but they're a welcome change to the usual ironic/sardonic/satiric nature of most of the chats - all styles which I personally enjoy as well though.

It takes a keen eye though to discern whether a serious thread is trickery or actually a sincere attempt at real conversation with substance. There's always a risk involved in replying to such threads here, but if the joke's on me sometimes I don't really mind. I love a good conversation either way and sometimes insincere thread initiation ends up eliciting some helpful or thought provoking exchanges by unsuspecting contributors. So, as long as malice is not involved, it's all good.

I couldn't agree more..so long as malice is not involved Ive been involved in many great and fun convos too..

Really good topic! I pick and choose which topics interest me and ignore the rest. I am the same person online as I am in real life, I can make a joke, I can take a joke and I can take a comment with a grain of salt. I've exposed vulnerabilities and have watched them be cared for and supported, I have also had my *kitten* handed to me on occasion. Grain of salt. I keep coming back, as I find most do, because it's a great distraction from real life stresses, depression, anxiety and *kitten* lives. I don't feel bad for defending myself or others, I don't feel bad for calling someone out and I don't feel bad for someone who takes offense to me. Just as I don't take offense to anyone being insensitive to me.

Thats awesome you don't take offense, me neither ..but there seem to be a lot who do ..
