I highly recommend reading through the stickied threads at the top of the "weight loss" forum. Primarily this one: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10300319/most-helpful-posts-general-diet-and-weight-loss-help-must-reads#latest

Then post any follow up questions you may have.

    Best wishes.

Eat less, move more. That's it. Easier said than done, I know. But at its core, that's all you've gotta do.

OP, read the stickies at the top of each forum.

    The short version is:

    Enter your stats into mfp.
Get a $15 digital food scale.
Log your food consistently every day.
Choose correct entries in the database and use the food scale as often as possible.
Hit your calorie goal by eating a varied diet.
Try to fit in your fave foods.
Move as often as you can, in whatever way you enjoy.

There are plenty of specifics beyond these that can help some people, but those are the basics. Good luck :)

If your diet isn't in check (eating at a caloric deficit), running will just make you into a fat runner. And cardio doesn't "burn fat" - it expends calories, and calories are what drives weight loss/gain. Take in less than you burn, lose weight; take in more than you burn, gain weight.

I'm taking on top of a calorie deficit. Thought that was pretty obvious

But seriously. Run. You need to be ready for boot camp if you join the army. My son just joined the air force - I'm on a mom's Facebook page - new recruits are put in med hold daily or recycled for not being able to pass the physical tests and they run A LOT. Know the test requirements and be able to pass them before going in. Also if it's like the air force you need to be 10 lbs under the weight limit to have a buffer.

Unfortunately, once you've been here a while and read a lot of the forum posts, you'll see that it's not obvious to everyone. Plenty of people here will ask in honest confusion why their 30 minutes of Zumba, which burned 800 calories dontcha know, combined with the morning lemon water, evening juice cleanse, and nothing consumed after 6pm isn't melting 5lb of fat off their bodies a week. Seriously.

Not necessarily -- I had to focus on *not* gaining weight when I was training for a recent marathon because I got so hungry. It's a lot easier for me to stay within my calorie goals when I'm running moderately -- anything over 35-40 miles a week and I want to eat everything.
