I despise "Black Thursday".

It's no longer "Black Friday" and this is the second year in a row that I have to avoid traffic on my way home. The Paragon (San Francisco Premium Outlets) Outlets in my town has traffic on 580, backed all the way up to 680 on the right 2 lanes and is slowing down all other traffic (about 4 miles).
Next year, I'm taking the back way home.

We avoid black Friday like...the plague.
Usually have get together fruday after to break the rest of the turkey down into new meals everyone can freeze.
But this year we are participating in Green Friday. California state parks give free day passes for "black" Friday for a ton of different parks here. Gunna hike and picnic.

The closest I'll get to any store today is to gas up my work truck. All the hype, the crazy, that's nutz. I want nothing to do with it.

I believe that it's suicidal, mainly because people have been, "accidentally" stampeded to death! I once went to the opening, of a new electronics store; approximately 6 years ago & it was in October, so there was only a maximum; of 50 people there. They only let us in, 10 at a time & there was a wait of 5 minutes, before allowing in; another 10 & thus I was comfortable enough, to stay & shop. My Sister went with me, which I was against because of potential dangers, especially since she was still a child; although a teenager but our Mother would've allowed her, to go alone; so that's why I relented my stance. However if I had minor children, they would've been made to stay home; regardless of their age!

Why shop we you can simply acquire goods that have fallen from the back of a moving truck?

Yeah it drives me nuts too. That being said, I got everything from the comfort of my couch online on Thursday morning, so there's that.

stuff. I really despise stuff. amassing it on black thursday is as weak as amassing it on any other day. that being said, I just bought myself a really sweet new ride, so, hypocrisy much? i don't know.

I used to work as a manager for Toys R Us and Circuit City and during those years was involved in Black Friday openings. People are savages on that particular day. It was really tough at Toys R Us because people would bring their kids.
And people are very rude that day too. Especially when you run out of door openers.

Bummer. I so don't get the whole let's go shopping thing when there's Amazon with free shipping plus gift wrapping.

On a similar note - most of my co-workers opted to work on Thanksgiving so they could have Black Friday off. I remain silent on the issue at work, but am privately appalled.

    You and me both.

I think people are more attracted to the crowds and excitement than the deals. Because like you said, you could get the stuff online just as cheap.

"Crowds and excitement" are "Mobs and brawls" around here. :/

Seriously - we avoid any and all public shopping on black thursday/fridays.

Black Friday taps into peoples' hunter and gatherer instincts. It's a competitive sport. Waiting 36 hours in line at Best Buy means bragging rights.

I hate Black Friday - and honestly the insanity of any shopping attempts during the Christmas season - but especially Black Friday. I am lucky that most of my friends and family have agreed not to do gifts, so I just have to order something to ship to my aunt and uncle out west - and that I did a couple weeks ago online. But people turn into complete *kitten* at this time of year, at least when it comes to shopping. I would rather pay full price then deal with it (luckily online works for most stuff too).

Im not a fan and tend to get my shopping done online before Thanksgiving. My son on the other hand is fascinated. I'm debating driving to Capitola (nearest mall) to show him and get my steps in.

When I was taking marketing and advertising classes, I would scrap so hard with my instructors because M&A basically boils down to "How do we trick people into buying dumb *kitten* that they don't need for way too much money." and I'm not comfortable with doing that to people.

I despise it all. Black Friday, Christmas, Boxing Day, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Labour Day...all of it is just a small part of the massive machine designed to separate you from your money, mostly for no good reason.

Don't even get me started on diamonds!!

I wonder why stores go through this because statistically, shoplifting in one day is highest on Black Friday.

I ventured out to my neighborhood Wal-Mart in the evening of Thanksgiving day. It was an amazing sight. The parking lot was 90% filled with cars. Every cash register was occupied by an employee. Employees in highly visible vests were directing traffic. A police officer was checking receipts and packages for electronic devices. I only wanted to get a few grocery items and I was able to get what I wanted and get checked-out promptly. I don't play the 'get the best deal' game, so there. I don't have the toys.

Hate it so much! It's even starting to creep into our Thanksgiving because family members wanna go out right after dinner. CRAZY!

We actually love "Grey Thursday" and Black Friday. It's like our family tradition - we all go out and have fun. I like the hustle and bustle and have never had a bad experience. I can understand how people may not like it, but for my family it's quality fun time. To each their own.
