You keep tabs on your bank balance. Just treat your calorie balance the same way.

But... but... I might miss a like on Facebook if I counted my calories
On a more serious note: having once ended up with all my accounts in the red and only the equivalent of maybe 5$ to buy food for 2 weeks... that analogy definitely speaks to me.
In hindsight it seems so silly to end up so far up in debt that you can't buy food. But no one is born a financial genius (well I'm sure there's exception, but I'm not). I had to learn the abc of keeping tabs on my money.
Food intake is just another one of those things. I don't naturally do it correctly, ergo I use a tool that helps me do it right.

I totally agree in seriousness though, we cannot control what we are not mindful of.1
