"The Prime" detox by Kulreet Chaudhary MD

I've searched MFP for any topic on this and couldn't find anything. I apologize if this is a repeat or posted in the wrong forum. Has anyone been on this program and had success? I really like the concept of the detox (not your typical detox) as a way to improve health slowly, and as an added benefit, potential weight loss. I am on phase two, not seen a lot of improvement. Would like to hear other thoughts, or a link to the post of those on this plan? Thanks.

Detoxes are a big load of woo and nothing but a ripoff. They do nothing beneficial for you. Your body is already equipped with everything it needs to "detox" itself.
Two good, evidence-based reads on the subject:

Like I said, not a 'typical detox'. More of a healthy way of eating. Not looking for your judgement but rather comments from those how are on this plan. It is a lifestyle change not a quick detox.2

There are thousands of detox threads in here - how did you miss them? They all claim being "not typical".
If you want to lose weight, you need to be in a sustainded calorie deficit. If you aren't losing weight, you are eating too much for that to happen. If you expect fast and large losses, maybe you don't have the fat stores for that. If you don't have enough data points from reliable weigh-ins, maybe you can't see that you are losing weight.8 -
If you have some kind of health issues that an improved diet can help, like high cholesterol, blood pressure, or prediabetes, it can take some time and I would hope you are working with your doctor to determine success and other options.
If the improvement you are not seeing is weight loss, you are eating too much. You can overeat on any diet plan. Are you logging here? Are you using a food scale?3 -
I'm not looking for quick weight loss. I know there are detox threads. I was specifically looking for "the Prime". I understand about calorie deficit. If anyone has tried the Prime and read the book, please respond.2

" Integrative neurologist Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary discovered a beautiful side effect to the eating and lifestyle tools she gave her brain patients--spontaneously shedding excess pounds. In this, her first book, she shows us how to sharpen the brain, and smarten and heal the gut. Weight gain is not about the food, but about the body’s environment. Excess weight is a result of the body being in a toxic, inflammatory state. If your body is not prepared or ‘primed’ for weight loss, you will fight an uphill biochemical battle. Her program is not about what you can't have or do, it's about adding simple teas and herbs, and succeeding without giving up any foods you love. With The Prime, Dr. Chaudhary has reverse engineered our way of eating, so we can stop dieting backward and start losing weight instead. You'll learn:"

For more than 300 dollars, doubtful you will find many who are on this program when you can buy psyllium husk and flax for a fraction of the price.6

Sounds exactly like a typical detox to me. Utter woo.

Being ripped off by snake oil salesmen isn't a great lifestyle change.
Have more faith in your own ability to make positive changes - and save your money for a new wardrobe.8 -
Brace yourselves, a new year is coming. A new year, new resolutions and a tidal wave of detox threads hitting MFP.12

Dang. You can buy a lot of groceries and eat like a normal person for that kind of money.
OP: If you're looking for the food halo to get you started on your journey, stick with whole foods as much as possible. But it all boils down to calories. Eat the correct number of them to achieve your goals. You can do that with or without "toxic foods," organic foods, or hot pockets or lean cuisine. Your weight has nothing to do with "toxins" and the only purpose that word serves in the context of a diet program is to scare you into paying more for it. If your body was really in a toxic state, you'd be dead or dying.5 -

Again, I'm not looking at it for the weight loss benefit. Also not sure where the $300 came from; you can get the book for about $15. You don't need to purchase the 'program' supplements, they are available for a fraction of the cost from local stores. No, I'm not in a deadly toxic state, but do have health issues. Anyone actually read that book that would care to comment?1

If you have health issues, you should be sorting them out with a doctor. None of the bunk he presents is going to help with health issues. "Toxins" aren't the cause of your health issues.8

I wouldn't eat that. You'll become "inflammed" and end up with a chronic disease you'll need to pay Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary to "cure".9 -

The quotes posted prove that it's all about money, not helping people. If you want to help your medical conditions with diet, consult a doctor (a local physician, not a charlatan book and supplement pusher) and a dietitian. It's what they do.7 -

See a registered dietician if you need some guidance on eating appropriately for your particular situation.
What the others are saying is that there are always people writing books who are happy to take your money. Weight loss in general tends to benefit most, if not all, health conditions.
Start logging the foods that you eat. It will give you a good picture of what you are putting into your body, and then look at a few weeks worth of data to see where you may be consuming unnecessary calories. It really is that simple (that doesn't mean it's easy, losing weight takes time, patience, and dedication).5 -

I looked it up, and it sure looks like a typical detox -- different "stages" (not a lifestyle change, then), selling products that are supposed to help "detox" you, nonsense about certain foods "represent[ing] sticky toxic matter that can clog the channels of your body that carry nutrients to the cells and waste out of the body. Since cleansing is done to clear ama out of the body, you'll want to stay away from foods that build more ama in the body...."
I'm all for healthy eating and changing your diet to improve it, especially if you don't eat a nutritious or calorie appropriate diet now, but don't see why a "detox" is useful in achieving that aim. Understanding nutrition and your own habits is.5 -
OP I know it can feel irritating when people don't answer your actual question but this is a discussion forum and you're going to get opinions. If you've seen the other threads on detoxes as you say, I can't imagine why you think this thread is going to lead anywhere different.4
-
Oh. So it's based on ayurveda.
OP, you don't have ama causing your health issues. If you have genuine health issues, see a doctor.3 -
Not a fan of detox for weight loss but I do think that there is something to having food sensitivities and your body being in an inflammatory state. I wish that restrictive diets would not be called detoxes or cleanses. It is very misleading and not sustainable.
Hope you find the information that you need.
For some humor...no kidding...had a neighbor who did her own cleanse but with beer for the bargain price of $5 a day. She drank a 6-pack a day and lost all interest in food. She didn't indicate if it helped with bowel movements but she did lose weight. She didn't recommend it to others.

If I could drink a tea and loose weight I would ,, but I can't .. CI CO ...
Good luck4 -

I used to work for a company that used Ayurvedic powders, but only for the hair and skin. To be honest, my hair didn't really like any of the herbs, but my skin loves amla." I'm sorry, topic creator, but the bolded in Seud0nim's post which was taken from the webpage IS absolutely wooderp.
1. Excess weight is NOT a result of the body being toxic. Excess weight is the result of eating more calories than you need to maintain your current weight. How can the body even be toxic? We have liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and bladders... our own body's detoxing organs. If we truly need a detox, something is seriously wrong (need to go to the emergency room ASAP!) or we've been taking lots of drugs and alcohol (the only reason why someone with functioning organs would need a detox). Anyone, yes anyone, can lose weight if they decrease their calories, you just have to be accurate (count calories and weigh your food before you log it. Many here have lost up to 100lbs or more just by eating less calories than they need.
2. Teas and herbs do not detox. There is absolutely *no* scientific evidence to back up what this doctor writes.
3. You have to buy a book that may not even work. You don't have to pay for myfitnesspal.
4. Integrative neurology isn't even a university full time course. It is alternative medicine.
5. There are no links to the 'studies' the author participated in on her website
6. Claims to heal chronic diseases.
7. You have to buy the herbs and teas from their 'favourite' company
8. "We do not offer refunds once you’re assigned to your group. By joining, you make a commitment to yourself and your team members. Deep detoxification has ups and downs. We invite you to commit to the journey and be open to the changes as they come."
9. It believes there is "fake fat" and real fat. Yeah, okay.
10. "Irritability usually means you’re detoxing." No, Irritability means: too low calorie, caffeine withdrawal, drastic lowering of carbohydrate.
11. "You’re mobilizing toxins, called ama in Ayurveda, which is a sticky, sludge-like substance. It can stop you up a bit." No, the constipation is from a huge decrease of fat and fiber.
12. $300. What? You can buy a weeks worth of groceries for a family.
Ugh...no, just no.12 -
Oh look! The good "doctor" has been on the Oz show. <eye rolly>
