Vegan Diet - How can I get more Fat & Protein?

For the last 2 weeks, my wife and I have been basically eating a Vegan diet - no meats & dairy (milk/cheese). We've also stopped eating grains (bread, crackers, chips, rice, pasta), sugar, and drinking any form of soda.
We are basically only eating raw and cooked vegetable, fresh fruit and 100% fruit juice (for a total of 21 days).
While enjoying the change of pace of our normal food consumption, my only true problem is consuming enough fat and protein. We are eating a variety of beans to acquire the major of our protein and fat (pinto, black, lima, kidney, black, navy, great northern, etc..) but still coming up way short of the daily 60 grams of fat and 70 grams of protein MFP says I be having.
Any suggestions on acquiring more while on this fairly restrictive diet.

nuts and peanut butter( natural peanut without sugar is available) are high in fat (good fat)
avocados have lots of fat
and... that's all i can think of.
good luck!0 -
The cleansing diet you are on is a very short term regimen and MFP is not geared towards the extreme measures you are doing....the MFP is for a diet that is long term so you should not expect to reach the MFP guidelines on your cleanse
good luck...that raw food cleanse is extreme and you should be concerned with the sugar you are taking in via the fruits and juices0 -
Greetings and good luck to you. My husband and I don't buy chicken or red meat, and have tried to find creative ways to boost our protein. He did a post-doc in heart disease, so needless to say, we don't frequent the chain fast food establishments. We enjoy quinoa with spinach and a little garlic powder mixed in and sometimes add what we call "fake" chicken patties (those are the Morningstar chik patties made from soy). The Barilla complete pasta products (I think that's what they're called -- they're in the yellow box on the same aisle as the Muellers and the other pastas) have good amounts of protein. We also eat peanut butter, and like the reduced fat Jif crunchy (if you can find that -- only one chain locally carries that variety in the reduced fat version). I also like to make vegetarian Sloppy Joes with the Morningstar Griller Crumbles, good protein and really decent taste. I hope those ideas are helpful!0

have you tried soy products or is that out too0

p.s. soy products are good for your wife but men should avoid soy products0

Wow,
My husband is a vegan... but since you are on the Raw food for only 21 days I would say, all those beans you are eating are pretty good. You cant eat tofu either can you... hmmm well I guess you need to get on a Raw Food site and ask them... I bet they have more info. Especially those who eat the raw foods all the time.
Good Luck0 -
avocados are wonderful and you can even add them into fruit smoothies..they are vey mild and the flavor can be hidden with fruit..I was a vegan for years and ate no processed foods and was about 80% raw so I understand the limitations...I also use ground flax seeds and flaxseed oil cold pressed..
are you allowed raw nuts? .you can even make homemde nut milk and nut butters and many health food stores have them with no additives and raw...0 -
It has definitely had the cleansing effect, but I am concerned on the amount of carbs (sugar) consumed. I'm hoping the 10 glasses of water I am drinking is helping neutralize some of them.
I have been considering continuing the Vegan diet for an extended period but not sure how one can do so and maintain the balance diet of carbs, fat and protein.0 -
Coconut or just the coconut milk will give you some fat.0

Make a vinaigrette dressing with olive oil. Put this over a bean/vegie salad0

How long has he been vegan? Was he Vegetarian prior to going vegan?0 -
I guess if I decide to go for a longer time, I might learn to enjoy the soy products and avacodo - but I have never been able to eat much of either.
Now peanut butter is another thing - could eat it daily.
Never thought of coconut milk.
Thanks all!!!0 -
I'm not too familiar with the raw food thing, but I am with the vegan food.
I have a few satisfying vegan soups that are packed with protein ...
My favorite being a thai curry soup. I add coconut milk, cubed tofu, nut butters to a vegan soup base with whatever veggies I can find in my fridge and a heaping tablespoon of curry paste and bragg's (or soy sauce). Top it off with some fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lemon or lime. I usually add organic brown rice too, but you could skip that and it would be just as satisfying.
There are some great soy products out there ... light life makes a wonderful faux sausage and faux chicken strips ... eww the "facon" is good too! I try not to rely on those too much, but they are really good.
Good luck!0 -
Boca burgers! They're vegan friendly. So is tempeh. Try both of them, love them0
