How do you burn calories during sleep?

You burn calories by being alive.
Do you burn as many sleeping as you would doing an intense exercise? No, but your body requires calories to keep everything working.6 -
You're always burning calories. You burn calories just keeping your body alive. Pumping blood, breathing, digesting food, etc.6

Breathing burns calories. Heart beating burns calories. Cells doing their thing burns calories. Digesting burns calories. Healing burns calories.
A person in a coma burns calories. That's why they have to feed comatose patients, otherwise they'd starve to death.8 -

You move, you roll over.
You maintain your body temp at 98.6 (ish) degrees.3 -
As others pointed out, you always burn calories.
Your body uses calories to keep your body functioning (heart beat, breathing, ect). You burn more by doing daily tasks and even more when you exercise.
The only time I know of when our bodies are not burning calories is when we are dead. However until that time, we do.1 -

I heard if you exercise in your dreams while sleeping you burn more calories too. I don't know it it's true, though.
I frequently go "walking" when I'm asleep, or so I'm told. Do you mean like if you lift weights and the afterburn burns calories while you sleep? I've also read that you might burn a few more if you sleep in the freezing cold bc your body will shiver but I can't imagine that being worth it.0

If you're cold enough to shiver, you won't be able to sleep! But your body burns calories keeping warm even if you aren't shivering.
And if you have recently exercised then there will definitely be muscle repair going on, which will burn calories.
And then there is your huge energy-guzzling brain, which is busy all night sorting memories and processing experiences from the day, and in any case burns about 20% of your total energy intake regardless of what it is doing.0 -

I try to roll around as much as possible. Burn extra calories that way. I dont get much sleep that way but you burn more calories when you are awake in any case.3

OP- have you ever considered this? or did you think people in comas - ie permanantly asleep - do not need any calories??
What did you think the tube feeding was then ??

One of my tricks for getting to sleep is to imagine myself walking over mountains, garden paths, bridges, tunnels- after a while they blur into one and I drift off.
Yes, seriously.
If only it burnt as many calories as actually doing those things.

your body still has to function when you sleep. Your heart beats. You breathe. You dream. Your organs function. All that takes calories to accomplish.0
