Habit, boredom, anxiety - these are the most likely causes. I often pop up a 100 calorie bag of popcorn and eat it one kernel at a time so my mouth is busy but I'm not stuffing myself or eating more than I should.5

Mmmm yes i love popcorn. It was always just boredom for me id eat until stuffed and still want to eat more. Was kind of uncomfortable. Maybe also try hard candies to keep your mouth busy for longer periods?1 -
This is when I have a diet soda or a cup of tea, then chew gum or brush my teeth. Usually does the trick.2

For me cravings aren't in "my mouth" but are more psychological0 -
It can be a sensory thing, like you just want the sensation of of putting something in your mouth and chewing and/or swallowing. I get that sometimes, too. I find chewing gum or drinking water to be helpful.1

I think you're right - it'll be interesting to see what they do with it. Hope they don't ruin it!0 -

The mouth likes to eat. It's a basic urge that is only slightly related to hunger. This is why babies like to suck dummies (pacifiers) - the urge to suck is very powerful and doesn't always go away at the same time as their hunger is satisfied. Adults vary in how strong the urge to suck and chew is - in me it's pretty strong. I find hot drinks can help, also chewing gum.1
