Frustrated...Eating out!

Hardly do I find the convenience of going to a national chain restaurant where they are so kind to have their calories on their websites. No, instead I must be difficult and eat at little eateries and mom and pop places that are delicious...but I end up calculating my calories on my own!
Tonight I am going to dinner at an italian restaurant with a group of friends. I've already looked at the menu and am struggling with what to get. Obviously pasta is out of the question...so I'm stuck on the salad list. Do I just guess how many calories by breaking apart the recipe?
Then there's this weekend. My husband and I are going out of town to a new city for four nights, woo hoo! I'm so excited...but completely panicking about my calories. I've decided I'm going to sneak out of bed early to work out in the hotel gym when I can...but food, I'm afraid, is going to troublesome.
Thoughts/suggestions??
Thanks for your support out there!

I'm not sure if its the best practice, but that's how I usually calculate my calories when eating out (I seem to have the same problem as you - I usually eschew the chain restaurant for a mom and pop). In any case, I usually add extra fat (tablespoon of butter and olive oil) when eating a pasta dish. I WILL say that I log almost everything I eat and since the majority of the food I eat doesn't get past my logging police, I'm alright with flubbing (or rather not getting it EXACTLY right) a meal or two every once in a while. Life is too short to make yourself crazy if eating out is not something you do every day.
Hope that at least provides a little support! Cheers!0 -
Hey, I'm in the same boat as you and actually for this upcoming weekend also! I so know how you feel.
I've just started MFP, and have been having some progress this week. While I look forward to getting away too, I'm also afraid of the eating aspect. Most everything that we'll be around will be local eateries. I've been thinking that the best thing I can probably do is just watch my portion sizes. So although I can't accurately log my calories, I can at least try to be mindful of the portions that I eat and try to choose healthier options if available while allowing myself some splurges to enjoy here and here too.
Hope this helps and gives you support to know you're not alone in this struggle this week.
If all else fails, when we get back home and to the "norm," we'll just have to step up our efforts from there and move forward!! :happy:0 -
Honestly? Just go and enjoy yourself!! Choose sparkling water instead of soda, choose fish or chicken instead of beef and choose a tomato based sauce instead of a cheese one and I think you will be absolutely fine!!
An excellent idea is to try logging what you think you might have before you go so you don't have too many nasty surprises, do you have anything in mind?
Enjoy it0
