LA Fitness?

Thoughts on LA Fitness? I'm looking to join a gym. I had a membership to 24hr Fitness a long time ago and liked them, but there isn't on close to my new house.
Are there some good classes?
How early do they open?
Do they have a good variety of equipment?
What has your experience been like in the past, good or bad?
Thanks!

I love LA Fitness. Was an long-time member until I had to move to a state that doesn't have any franchises. I really miss them. Classes as early as 5:30. Lots of evening classes, including Friday at most clubs. I highly recommend it.0

Depends on what you're looking for. I have a membership to L.A. Fitness and I love the classes. When I first started working out I liked the variety of cardio machines, including several different types of ellipticals. I've never done a lot of weight lifting there, but there seem to be a variety of weight machines. I don't like doing free weights there, because it seems like the clubs in our area (there are 3) all have the free weight sections overrun with bodybuilder type guys, and its a little intimidating. The website has the hours and class schedules for clubs.0

I love LA Fitness. I've been going to one for about a month. There are tons of classes. I would go online find the one in your area and look at the class schedule. Also you can print a free 3 days pass.0

The one I used to go to was always crowded and also had people in there talking too much, trying to look cute and tying up the machines. My wife spoke to a former personal trainer and they said that their boss told them to over work the clients.0

My experience has been positive overall. Everything (hours, classes, equipment) depends on location as well as age. One near my office opens at 4am but one near home opens at 5:30am. Weekday closing hours are generally 10pm to Midnight. Classes start as early as 5:30am and late as 8pm, with lots of spin, yoga, pilates, aqua fit, "body works plus abs", "Latin heat", some boot camp style, etc. Newer facilities have latest equipment, while I've noticed older facilities oftentimes still have old, abused equipment (I've visited 12+ throughout Southern California to make that generalization).
You can get exact hours and class schedules on lafitness.com.
The only negative is the terrible initial experience I had with the trainers. Many are crap and just there to push sales, which is common throughout big gym industry. Lot of good ones move on to personal training studios, etc. Too often, there is little personalization and follow-up. You yourself have to be pretty proactive about your training and scheduling, but this shouldn't be the case for many beginners considering how much they dole out.0 -
I have been a member of LA Fitness since October of last year. Once you get past the sales pitch, it is a very nice gym. Staff is really cool. I have been working with a personal trainer since January and highly recommend it. They are pretty willing to work with you budget so that you can get some training in. Definitely try a few different trainers, I found one that sets a great pace for me so that I progress without getting burnt out.0

When I toured LA I was not impressed. The people who I dealt with looked like plastic people. It was very, very snooty and even though I consider myself pretty fit, I was totally uncomfortable there. The most comfortable place for me to work out was the Y. Eventually I got fed up with our local Y always cancelling group ex classes and just being generally unprofessional, so I moved over to 24 Hour. I like it at 24 Hour, but definitely not as personal as the Y. I like the sense of community at the Y. They have their pros and cons, and it kind of depends on what you're looking for.
Honestly, if I had the money and didn't have a membership anywhere, I'd go sign up for Crossfit tomorrow.0 -

I've belonged to two of them. Both were good and reasonably priced.
They have a very full class schedule and most of the instructors are very good. Classes go from 5:45 AM right through 8:30 PM at my current LAFitness.
They are open at 5AM on weekdays and 8AM on weekends/holidays.
They have a good variety of equipment and dozens of every cardio machine, which is a big help as you are less likely to have to wait for equipment.
I've found them to have very nice locker rooms; be pretty clean; most have childcare onsite; most have pools, hot tubs, saunas, racketball courts and basketball courts; they're very good about maintaining equipment-at any given time, 99% of the equipment is in full working order.0 -
Thanks for all the great replies, very informative. They sound about what I expected, once we get moved I'll do the three day trial to see if I like the one near me. I really want to get back in a gym, and maybe by that time I'll have lost enough weight that I won't be too embarrassed to work out! Lol
Shirelle, what is Crossfit?0
