ladies help tmi post

so hopefully only the ladies will read this but I am 22 and have a 1 year old I've been working out for 2 months now and eating 75 percent healthier. well I've been on the nuva ring for about a little less that a year but probably pretty close to it. last month I spotted a week before my period and it was like 4 days of spotting then 3 days off then got my period. then two weeks later spotted for a day and now once again a week before my period spotting a lot. I went to the doctor but he just said give it 3 months of my body getting use to exercising. so what I'm asking has this happened to anyone who started trying to lose weight. I'm almost worried that not that I'm trying to better my body and health imma find I have something wrong with my health. thanks and sorry for the tmi

Hi, I would definitely not worry and listen to your doctor and just keep going for 3 months and unless you are feeling extra pain or weird symptoms then try not to stress until that time is up. I haven't had this happen exactly but I did have issues with birth control (I spotted no matter what they gave me so basically had a continuous period...super annoying!).

The more you stress the harder it will all be (and more inconsistent your body will be) chances are that everything is fine and your body just isn't used to the exercise!

I'm not personally familiar with the nuvaring, but it's hormonal birth control and you can get spotting with other types so isn't surprising you can get it with this one as well. It's not a sign of health problems, it's just that your body is confused what time of the month it is and thinks it might be period time. Any change, like starting new exercise, can affect the hormones and have effects on your periods.

I know it can be scary to see blood at the wrong time of the month, but if your doctor isn't worried, you don't need to be either. It's just one of these little annoyances.

If you are able to switch doctors, I would recommend doing that. You deserve better than someone who doesn't take your concerns seriously.

Different hormonal birth control types affect each individual differently. For me, Alesse gave me the symptoms you describe. I switched to Nuvaring, which contains a different type of synthetic progesterone. Cleared it up for me no problem.
It does however sometimes take several months for your body to adjust, but if you are concerned your doctor isn't taking you seriously, it's time to think about getting another doctor.

And if it carries on, there are lots of other options to try.

Birth control is pretty horrible for your body unfortunately it's crucial to prevent pregnancy its unpredictable to know how someone's body will react to the hormones. A lot of woman have to keep changing to find one their body likes good luck girl try not to worry about it if your doctor said not to.

You have a few options 1) Call you doctor's office back and let them know symptoms are worse and you'd like a new appointment to discuss your concerns. 2) Call doctor's office and ask for a referral to a gynecologist or women's health NP, 3) call a nurse-advice line for further information and advice from a medical professional (most insurance companies and hospitals offer this service for free - see if yours does), 4) find another provider for a secondary consult, 4) do nothing and see if it resolves with time.

There are many causes of non-menstrual spotting, particularly for women using hormonal contraception. Most of these causes are easily dealt, though occasionally the spotting can be a sign of something serious (as I'm sure google now has you convinced is occurring). While it is unlikely it is serious, you probably do need further care to determine the exact cause and what, if anything, should be done.

Based on personal experience I highly recommend seeing a gynecologist or other women's health specialist if you can. I had this sort of intermittent spotting occur to me, and after several months it didn't clear up and was becoming worse. My provider (fortunately) was willing to discuss my concerns and at her recommendation I saw a gynecologist. That provider determined the hormone dose in my contraceptive wasn't at the right level for me. All it took was a new prescription for a slightly different formulation to fix the issue.

While breakthrough bleeding with the ring is normal, you can reduce the incidence of it with the method described here: http://www.modernmedicine.com/modern-medicine/news/clinical/clinical-pharmacology/bleeding-profile-contraceptive-ring-use-acceptab [Use a backup birth control method for those 4 days.]

I think giving it three months first was good advice, though.

However, I don't like that your doctor didn't take your concerns seriously, and if it were me would seek another doctor.

I'm with the VA, don't have GYN choices, and have had to put up with less than ideal practitioners, so if you have a choice, exercise it.

I had your same symptoms when i had implanon put in, I had to get it removed as it never got any better. You might be lucky and everything may normalise for you.

Diet change, exercise, and weight loss can cause some hormone fluctuation, which can cause spotting or other changes in your cycle. Once you establish a rhythm your body will get equilibrium back and your cycle will normalize. If symptoms get worse, however, re-visit your doctor just to cover your bases.

Can you get a referral to a gynaecologist or at least see a GP/primary care doc who has an interest in women's health?

i could ask for a referal but i doubt he will give me one. im still waiting after 5 months for a referal to a neuroligist for migraines i was getting daily im very blessed that since iv started trying to get healthier i dont get them as frequently as i did. im going to give it another month or two and if nothing chanhes im going to push for another opinion. before i had my daughter i was on the nuva ring for a year and a half and had no problema ever and then went off it for a year and had my daughter. if it ends up being the nuva ring im just going to go off birth control all together and just be safe and careful

Hey OP I'm experiencing the same thing too! I'm on hormonal birth control and have been trying to lose weight for the past month and a half and have been noticing spotting before the sugar pill period. Now the last time I had bleeding i was under a especially stressful period at work and my doctor said that stress can trigger the spotting and not to worry about it. It settled after about 3 weeks. This time it's been 4 days and it has been bleeding less and less, I see it as I'm putting my body through more 'stress' now that I'm working out more that it was used to when I was just lounging around. So I'm not too worried but if it gets worse I'll check with my doctor.

I wouldn't discount all hormonal contraception based on one type, there are more options available. As your Doctor says it might settle down. You sound like you're from the UK if so you can always call NHS 111 for non-emergency advice if you're concerned, and you can always request to see another doctor within the practice if you're not happy with the one you have normally.

Also Neurology regularly has a really long wait depending on your area, but it’s also worth phoning the practice who made the referral to chase it up. It's rare but referrals can get lost, did they give you an idea of how long you’d expect to wait?
