Holiday tipping

We got a Christmas card from our trashman and assumed he is angling for a tip. I do want to reward his initiative but am not sure how much to give him. Thoughts?

Also, if any of you tip your mailman this time of year, how much do you give? (Just watched the episode of Weeds in which the mailman complained about never getting tips, so I see pop culture considers this practice to be not unexpected, but also not common.)

Thanks.

Funny, my wife and I were wondering the same as we just received a Christmas card from the pest control guy who sprays our house every three months...

We do Christmas tip our cleaning lady...but we see her every couple of weeks.

One of my friends delivers newspapers and she's like 6 months pregnant. Hard work. I'd think at least $10 for anyone you think deserves a tip. If you're not happy with your service than nah, but it's only once a year.

    Tips?

    To the mailman ??
    That's not going to happen.

    My landscaper? Sure.
    My pool guy? Yeah.
    Our personal chef ? Absolutely.

Interesting article. However, NYC has a much more colorful history around sanitation and corruption than does my town.

How much do you give your personal chef? I'm going to tell my OH that his personal chef needs a tip :D

Ya, I was thinking $10 for the trashman as well.

We typically tip him A few thousand dollars or give him a nice gift .
    (or both ).

He shouldn't complain because we also provide him a good salary along with his own guest quarters between our helipad and tennis court.

Fortunately, it's upwind from the stables.

    Tipping always interests me.
It's literally hardly ever done in the UK - I'm visiting the USA next year and I'm actually a little worried about adapting to this cultural difference! Haha

Tip your waitress at least 20% that's probably all the tipping you'll have to do.

Eh, I don't gift any of them, but it's only because I struggle enough to buy for my family.

Side note: Weeds is the best TV show!

I admit it I am a terrible human being :'(

I have never tipped the mailman, landscaper, garbage pickup guys..... I have taken them for granted....

I tip very well in restaurants though.... like even 50%

Wow you are a generous tipper. I thought my 22-24% was good.

Tipping the garbage man just seems weird to me--I've never met them in person, and they drive around in a truck.

The mailman--kind of the same here in suburbia. When we lived in a small town where the mailman did walking rounds (and always made special effort for us) we definitely gave a Christmas gift--either a Starbucks card (to keep him warm) or an iTunes card (because he always wore headphones while he did his rounds)--Ben was an awesome guy!!!

Hair stylists and manicurist/pedicurist get double the usual tips for our December appointments.

We rice eating brown people do not tip. We love to suck the mofos dry and then blame them for a job poorly done.

My hairdresser does an amazing job. So much so that after I moved, I continue to drive 5 hours round trip every 5 weeks to have my hair done. She deserves a good tip too!

Holy crap, and I thought my hairdresser being an hour away was a bit much... I'm shopping for a new one because I'm tired of driving that far. And even though she does an amazing job, she's batguano crazy.

Wife and I go to gramercy tavern often. No tips. The restaurant bakes the gratuity into the food. Dinner for two was like 250 bucks but no hassle on tipping and such.

    I love Gramercy Tavern.

One restaurant in Dallas is trying the no-tip thing. I hope it catches on. Restaurants here are in a crisis trying to retain good waitstaff, and I think they'd have more success if those employees knew they'd get a consistent paycheck instead of being wholly dependent on patrons' whims. Dear diner, just because your waiter took 30 seconds longer than you liked to bring you your glass of wine doesn't mean you get to leave a $0 tip, you asshat.

Well now.... guess who won't now be invited to our Winter Gala Event.

Remind me to have my manservant strike your name from the list.

I live in a building in NYC. You'd better believe that the building tips those who take care of us.

In addition, I personally tip the mail lady. She goes above and beyond for us and has done so for years. When she collects for a food drive I contribute, and when she does the Breast Cancer Walk we sponsor her.

I also tipped the gym people that work hard with me - my favorite teachers, the maintenance staff person who adjust my bike for me three times a week, and the manager that I make crazy with my questions.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease!!

I have never tipped the mail carrier or trash collector.
I'm not sure people do that where I live. My family and dh's family never tipped these people.

My mailman is on the 'naughty' list, he's not getting anything unless he starts at least doing his job. Everyone else is safe and getting little extra for holidays

I am evil i only tip 2 people and one group... nothing special for the holidays though.
-- the woman who does my hair, but that is really a bribe so she does not make me look worse.
-- the tailor who alters my clothes.
-- the the group is wait staff, which i despise, all customers should simply stop tipping them. it should be the responsibility of their employer to pay them a reasonable wage, don't say that their is a 20% gratuity charge, just add it to all the menu prices, sure the customer still pays for it is less noticeable and the employee gets a set wage every week.

Honestly, I wouldn't have thought of it had he not left us a Christmas card. I wanted to reward that initiative. Also the card was signed Carlton your trashman...which made us think of Carlton your doorman.

Taxi drivers and bellboys get tips as well. No idea how much.
