Hi I've been using MFP for a few months now but this is the first time I've posted :) My question is I am pretty much always under on my calories, fat and carbs for the day but I always seem to go over my sodium by at least 50. I drink alot of water (pretty much all I ever drink) so is that really hurting me trying to lose weight? Thanks in advance :)

Looking at your diary it's looks like a couple of reoccurring things are really raising the sodium level. Next time you shop look for a better replacement. Even with a lot of water the sodium will slow you down. Good luck on your journey.

In my opinion and in my experience, yes. If I go over on sodium, I tend to gain weight, despite how much water I drink. Sodium doesn't just wash out of your body the day you ingest it. It takes a couple of days of decent water intake.

High sodium levels are linked to lots of problems including hypertension. It could also make you bloated.

    Marketside - Caprese Bag Salad

I don't know what this is but it seems to contribute to a LOT of your sodium. If it's your homemade salad may I suggest you reduce how much salt you add in there? Or if it's store bought you might want to eat less of it or cut it out completely. Breads (and the bun you eat) have a lot of sodium added. Check nutritional info for a brand that uses less sodium. Also the walmart muffin you eat, despite being low in calories, has a lot of sodium. You could make your own and not add any salt at all. I'm not familiar with a lot of the things you eat as I live in Australia but am I right in saying that you're taking in a lot of sodium due to eating processed foods? Just by making your own food you can cut your sodium levels down greatly.

before i added sodium to my diary nutrients ( i wasn't paying attention to it, until someone brought it up to me ) i was really overeating sodium, and i was still losing..i would say better than i am now, but i was doing kick butt workouts 5 nights a week, and sweating alot out..i say keep an eye on your loss, and if you lose, keep at it, but if not, start reading labels for lower sodium items, and cut back..this comment may get negative remarks, but our bodies are different, and what may hurt others, may work for you..listen to your body FIRST..best of luck :drinker:

THe sodium will NOT stop you from losing weight. What it will do is cause you to hold in to extra water weight all the time. There are some other drawbacks to eating sodium (for example: people who eat more sodium are more likely to DIE), but weight loss isn't a significant one.

That being said, I really try to watch my sodium so that the scale moves more consistently. Sodium makes me retain water, which is pretty annoying when it's weigh-in day.

    Best of luck to you!
  • I actually have low sodium levels often. When I do I drink V8 juice, (very high in sodium ) I may eat popcorn with extra salt on it., or corn on the cob, they are the only things I seem to enjoy salty. Most processed or canned foods taste too salty to me after weaning myself off of the salt years ago. Salt is an aquired taste, and its hidden every where, but you can ween yourself off it too. Try lowereing your count by a small percentage every day. By making you own food and using spices or other seasonings instead can drastically cut salt intake. Read labels. Buy smart from the start, is my advice.
