You worry about harming your metabolism and I've already explained how to harm it by deprivation and how to restore it by feeding in surplus.
A meal deliberately high in calories, which is what you are calling a 'cheat meal', should be considered in terms of a weekly or monthly calorie deficit, or whatever is the interval between your cheat meals. If you maintain a calorie deficit of -1000 per day you lose 2 lb per week and cause your metabolism to adapt to starvation. A single high calorie meal each 7 days is going to cause your weight loss to be less than 2 lb per week because you won't have a -7000 weekly deficit.
I've read no paper on this. The studies which demonstrated NEAT adaptation did not include 'cheat meals'.
This means that you may and may not help your metabolism by having cheat meals. I don't know.
In my own case, I've maintained -1000 daily calorie deficit over periods of weeks and months between varying intervals of days having excessive calories since January. I do not suspect that my metabolism is adapted to starvation, but I want to emphasize that I have not spent the large bucks to accurately measure my NEAT. I know that my NEAT has declined because I've lost 85 lb. I do not know if the decline in my NEAT exceeds what would be expected from an 85 lb loss.1 -
This is geared toward Low carbers, but it explains the concept nicely.

One meal isn't doing anything for your metabolism.5

Highly doubt it. =( would be cool if it did though, but it would also be cool if i could blink and lose 50lbs. It does help me stick to my calories throughout the week though and then i eat chocolate on my cheat day and it's also the day i usually go out and eat.. But I still count and try to make my cheat day maintenance calories, so i don't undo all the work leading up to it.2

No. Let me guess, someone posted this ridiculous tip to your Instagram page? Seriously, I really think it would benefit you to delete that page.14

A cheat meal might be helpful for the mental aspect of losing weight but won't really help with the physiological side. Maintenance breaks ever few months are extremely helpful. This article is a good read about diet breaks: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/the-full-diet-break.html/4

One meal won't do anything magical for your hormones and metabolic adaptations.
But It will help with adherence to a diet. In my personal experience having a controlled refeed every 5 days or so has really helped me stay on track. It definitely helps with gym performance. My workouts the day after a day eat at maintenance are always way better. I recover better on those days too.
I started off morbidly obese and have been on a deficit or at least tracking for a really long time. When I feel my will getting week I just eat more carbs with my dinner. No guilt.
In my opinion it's a really good psychological tool.5 -
They don't help...but are good for the psyche.0
