Folks,

Quick question- I do around 35-40mins of cardios and 20mins of strength training everyday. Do you ever burn calories by strength training- if yes, why doesn't MFP display it? I am trying to lose 75lbs over the next 6-7 months so want to make sure that I am "effectively" working out!

Rajiv.

They don't log calories for it on here under strength training because there are too many factors that are variable i.e. how many reps? how much weight? etc. I think you can find weight training under the cardio section, but it's an estimate at best. Under strength training on the site, you could log what your reps were, weight used, etc just for your own records.

The best way to know: heart rate monitor. Not cheap, but really a useful tool for weight loss & fitness in general. You can burn lots of calories by strength training.

look it up under cardio, and it should have it in there. That is how I keep track of it. I don't even enter in my individual lifts anymore, I keep track of them on my own spread sheet just for progress sake. I can hook you up with the spread sheet if you want. I print it out and fill it in while I lift, I find it a great tool on tracking my progress!
  • Strength training definitely burns calories! I don't know why it's not counted here, but Muscle Burns Fat. Cardio is great and necessary but if you want to lose that much weight you have to change your body composition and you do that by building muscle!
  • yes you actually burn more calories strength training than with cardio, because you continue to burn calories longer after a strength workout than a cardio session--that's why strength training is so essential to weight loss! as to why MFP doesn't recognize it I can't say... what i do is log it under cardio--I just create a new exercise and describe what i did, however I do also use a heart rate monitor that tracks my calories burned...

    good luck!
