Carb heavy diet

I had lost about a stone last year but let things slip and I've put on 2 stone so starting afresh. I'm vegetarian (no fish or meat, but I do eat dairy) and even though I did manage to lose weight I noticed my carb intake was always over 50% suggested and I do very little exercise (although I've started using an exercise bike) I tend to have potatoes, or bread or pasta or noodles or rice, quinoa etc etc with any main meal due to vegetarianism ....any suggestions how to redress this balance a little?

Just curious as to why you want to reduce your carbs? Just to have a more balanced ratio?

Sounds like many of your go-to carbs like potatoes and pasta are things that make you feel full. You might experiment with upping your protein from dairy or soy sources, which may give you the fullness you're looking for with fewer carbs.

You might also experiment with halving your starches with high-fiber veggies that can also fill you up without a lot of carbs. I like half mashed potato & cauliflower; half rice & riced cauliflower; and half pasta with steamed broccoli slaw (shredded broccoli stems)

Considering that carbs aren't the devil, you're fine...

If you'd like, increase your consumption of eggs and dairy.

6 months into my weight loss and my carb intake is between 40 & 50%. I don't watch it too much this just seems how I naturally eat. I'm down almost 40lbs so far.

I'm pescatarian by label but I mostly eat vegetarian and sometimes vegan meals. I have fish maybe once or twice a month.

I have started strength training with the help of a trainer and I have upped my protein a bit. I eat greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, beans & tofu which I'm not fond of yet, and Gardin veggie "meat" products to name a few to help up my protein a bit.

My carbs are quite high, usually about 170g a day but I've still lost weight, eating a lot of carbs doesn't make you put on weight, only calories have that effect.

Weight loss occurs when the correct calorie deficit is reached, not because of any specific macros ratios. Some find that they do better on a higher carb ratio for satiety and others find that they do better on a lower carb ratio for satiety. Just make sure you're hitting your calorie goals and eat whatever macros ratio helps you do that :)

I also tend naturally toward a carb-heavy diet. Tricks I used to increase my intake of healthy fats included putting almond butter on my toast (with just a tiny bit of jam/jelly/honey so that it doesn't stick to my mouth) and adding avocados to my salads - or having sliced avocado on Wasa crackers as a lunch or snack (extra delicious if you top the avocado slices with sundried tomatoes). I also try to include small measured servings of nuts or dark chocolate as snacks.

To increase protein, the only vegetarian-friendly suggestions I have are Greek yogurt, eggs, protein bars, and powder (which I have to mix with milk; protein powder in water is gross to me).

You're eating too many calories. If you don't exercise, you can't afford to eat too much so you have to be more mindful. Carbs per se are not the issue. My diet is plant based and therefore around 75% carbs on 1700-2000 calories, that's around 300g carbs, and I've lost nearly 40 lbs, down to ~115 lbs. If I'm not as active, I simply reduce the calories. The % carbs doesn't matter and essentially remains the same.
