How to Exercise When Unable to Use an Ankle

Options
I am in the midst of recovering from an ankle sprain. I am to stay off my foot as much as possible
Any ideas for effective cardio exercise? I do not have access to a pool, so water walking is not an option.

I was going to say swimming. So much for that.
Maybe cycling, or using a row machine? Probably still feel some pain though, depending on how bad the sprain is

I have similar at the moment; ligaments in my right ankle.

Rowing machine is OK and the turbo trainer is pretty good as long as you're not grinding in a high gear.

When I sprained my ankle I did a lot of upper body strength training.

Does your gym have an armbike?
Seated rows using a cable machine rather than a rowing machine would be better as you can place your feet to allow one leg to take all/most of the strain, harder to do on a rowing machine.

    Boxing or punch bag training.

Wheelchair Fencing, basketball, rubgy, football, etc, not just for those with mobility issues, you can keep playing after you're healed. You just need to google for clubs in your area, and those that cater for able bodied as well as chair users. Fencing wise you can just train in a static chair, and progress to standing.
