Hello! Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I was wanting to know how accurate my garmin vivosmart is as far as calorie burn goes. I've been working on myself for a few weeks and I thought I'd buy a fitness tracker to help me keep on track with my calorie burn/intake. I've worn it the last two days and it's showing me that I'm burning about 3500 calories a day, without exercise. I wanted to find what my natural daily burn was before exercise. Do you think this is a somewhat accurate number of calories that I'm burning? I am 28 years old and I weigh 288 lbs currently.

Thank you in advance for your time! :)

That confused the heck out of me too. My Garmin would say 2998 calories burned, when I hadn't been to the gym but was running to errands and walked quite a bit.

What the 2998 calories meant was ALL the calories burned during that day, digestion, respiration, your heart beating, etc. That usually adds up to 1600-1800 calories. I did burn almost 800 calories that day moving and walking (it's very hilly where I live). My Garmin updated my MFP with that 800 calories that I had burned through intensity minutes where my heart was beating faster and I was breathing more heavily.

Because I am very heavy - 189 lbs at 5 foot tall, I burn a huge amount of calories just walking, getting up from a chair, etc.

So yes, you may be burning that many calories overall each day. Synch up your Garmin to MFP and it pops the burned through movement exercise calories right in. That is pretty accurate.

Good luck and have a great time with the Garmin - love mine!
