Are you weighing and measuring how many calories are in the food you are eating?

    That's step 1.

This. Weigh and log all of your food and make sure it fits into your calories for the day.

Ditto. If you're not weighing and logging your food, you have no way of knowing how many calories you're consuming.

Oh wait you're a guy. I'm assuming by your screen name. I don't know if it's different for dudes? Still no more Arizona tea and chips.

Why not? Nothing wrong with either of them as long as OP is fitting them into his/her calorie targets.

Also meal timing/frequency is a preference thing-small, frequent meals are no better or worse than eating 2 large meals.

Because it's high in sugar and junk food.

    Neither will kill you.

But you can still fit it into your day. That's the cool thing about calorie counting and MFP. As long as you correctly and accurately log your food and maintain a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. You can still have pop, tea, and other junk (though many don't drink it, because the calories don't satisfy them. I find diet pop quite filling, but YMMV).

It will if you catch that diabetes ;)

I'm sorry if I sound like a maniac, but SUGAR DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES!!!!!. I'm sorry, but that is a huge pet peeve of mine (I am a type 1 diabetic).

Type 2 diabetes is hallmarked by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can be caused by genetics, medical conditions and medications (like PCOS, or if you're on long-term steroids), and can be aggravated by certain lifestyles (obesity, physical inactivity). Type 1 diabetes is caused by a genetic predisposition ontop of an exposure to some environmental trigger that causes an autoimmune attack on the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (we don't know what the trigger may be). Neither of them are directly caused by sugar (if you have a family history of type 2 diabetes are are obese due to an excess of daily calories, then you are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes).

LOL actually my grandmother was diabetic so I'm in line for it but I am NOT afraid of the sugar and so far all my bloodwork has been normal. Plus there are worse ways to go than with a snickers hanging out of your mouth. :)

But, yeah, for weight loss, you can eat whatever you want as long as you eat in a deficit. (Barring any medical conditions.)

    This^^

@Abraham2017 I would start by simply logging what you would normally eat for a week or two and finding areas where you could cut back and gradually get yourself into a calorie deficit.

There is no reason for him to cut out the foods that he likes just because they are arbitrarily labeled as "junk food". If he enjoys them and can fit them into his day, great. No harm in eating chips or Arizona tea in moderation.
