Question about working out

I worked out really hard yesterday to burn the calories that i had overdone the night before. About 700 calories worth. I am 2lbs heavier now, I know I didn't gain that because I haven't had enough calories to do so. Is it possible my muscle is holding onto the water since I worked out so hard yesterday. I jogged for about 50 minutes then came back and did 30 minutes of HIIT training. Thanks!!

  • It is likely that your body is retaining water. You muscles will do this after a heavy workout! Dont get discouraged! =)

Our body's do retain water, and for some reason our scales go up. Mine do this too but then it usually goes down a pound more.. Keep on working hard and watch your life change... Good luck

Generally, it takes a couple days for your body to reflect what you have done. I hiked a 14er (giant mountain) last weekend. I burned over 2000 calories, but it wasn't til Thursday til I saw a change on the scale. Give your body some time.

A 1lb to 2lb fluctuation from day to day is normal. It will vary not only one water retention but what you eat, when you eat it, when you void and when you weigh yourself.

The best rule of thumb is to always yourself at the same time under the same conditions. I personally weigh myself when I first wake up after the restroom. It keeps my weigh ins pretty consistent but even then I do not take a measurement, gain or loss, seriously until I see it repeated over a few days.

Absolutely! It happens to me all the time. Unfortunately, I don't work out very often - most of my exercise is cardio - walking and sometimes zumba. So when I do the "Total Body Workout" or similar class at the gym, I always see a weight gain over the next couple days, to accompany my sore muscles.

Same experience here. I ran a half marathon last month, burned almost 3000 calories because it was a trail run, and gained two pounds. Two days later though, I was back to my regular weight.

I've been wondering why I went up after a big workout. This makes me feel a little better. Thanks!
