    It's fine for overweight beginners. Here are my tips:

    1. Use a structured progressive lifting program -- don't just make one up.
    2. Make sure the program focuses on compound movements
    3. Start light and practice perfect form. Once your form is mastered, add weight slowly.
    4. If you're losing weight at the same time, don't expect to get stronger as fast as others
    5. Allow for adiquate recovery through diet and rest days

    Yes i have 50 more pounds of fat to loose.

    Perfect list! I would just add keep in mind if you start lifting, and youre weighing yourself the lifting might causes some water rention which will effect the scale, this will eventually go away though.

    Now is the time to start lifting! A good program a lot of people like is stronglifts 5x5.

    Not my thread... but where do you find lifting programs as mentioned above and are they suitable for home based workouts?

    All my clients lift weights. Some have different programs, but you can never go wrong by having a decent resistance training program.

    I'm on my second week of Stronglifts and have about 20 more lbs I would like to lose. I eat at maintenance on the days I lift and a slight deficit on my rest days. I also do a day or two of light cardio on days I don't lift. I have no clue if I'm doing it "right" but it's working for me so far. I'm really loving the program and lifting.
