Yoga for beginners

I'm looking to start trying yoga. I hear it helps with stress. My hours are long at work (13hr/day) so getting to the gym on the days that I'm on shift doesn't always happen. I was thinking that maybe yoga after work at home would help to unwind and keep me motivated.
Does anyone do yoga or have any pointers for someone starting out?

I do this video: https://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Conditioning-Weight-Suzanne-Deason/dp/B00004TKIC which I like because it shows modifications for those of us who aren't as flexible. It isn't as repetitive as some videos, and the background scenery is beautiful.

Yes. If you would like to unwind before bed, look up "yin yoga". It works beautifully for that, and would be reasonably safe to do on your own. Don't push or pull, just settle into the positions, support your weight with pillows if needed. It WILL help your flexibility, even though it feels gentle, and definitely knocks me out. Better than a drink

Once you are more experienced, putting the workout at the beginning of the day might actually work better, some ashtanga studios open at 5am, though i do not know your schedule so maybe that's too late.

Despite the hilarity of a professional wrestler being a yoga instructor, a lot of people have had success starting with DDP Yoga.

It's a little dated - but Crunch Candlelight Yoga by Sara Ivanhoe is very relaxing

Her DVD set Yoga Body Makeover is a series of several 20 minute workouts. Great Hawaiian backdrop.

    I also recently started yoga!

I will say attending a couple of classes before I started on my own helped me establish good initial form and learn some of the basic moves with a bit of guidance! If you don't do that just start slow, and if something hurts you are either pushing yourself too hard or might have an issue with form, so be patient with yourself to figure it out. One of the great aspects of yoga for me has been increased awareness of my body.

I like the super sister fitness morning yoga flow on YouTube as well. It's more like guided stretching that slowly works you into beginner yoga! Then if that is too easy they also have a yoga for weight loss video that is a little more challenging... both are free and they have other body weight cardio workout videos and etc. for those of us who are searching for a quick at home workout!

    Good luck :)
  • I did weight lifting for four years and about six months ago stopped and picked up yoga. It has helped me in so many ways. Strength, stamina, my mood, stress, flexibility etc. I took a few classes and mostly do everything on my own for the most part. It is one of those things you can make as relaxing or as athletic as you want. I get a decent workout from it using my body weight.
