How to work on improving emotional eating/ binge eating/ secret eating?

Hi MFPers :)

I have a problem when it comes to my relationship with food. Food is a comfort for me, and it is something that I use to reward myself when "I'm having a bad day". I love food, but also feel very guilty about eating it, which leads to secret eating. It is also difficult to stop eating once I have started, so I cannot have certain foods at home any more and when I eat my ordinary meals I have to be really strict with portion control.

Does anyone know how I would go about working on this? Are there any resources that you know of, or do you have any ideas? This is the thing that ruins my attempt to lose weight every time, so I need to work on this if the rest is going to work.

Thanks for reading :)

Learning to find new comforts. Reading, signing up for a class, exercising, etc

I could've written your post...I totally hear you. I found out today that there are facilitated groups that you can join for a set # of weeks (i.e. 8 weeks) with focus on things such as secret/binge eating. I suppose the facilitator in theory would have some sort of credentials related to MSW, counseling and/or eating disorders. I'm talking in hypotheticals because the concept was described to me today, but I haven't linked up with a specific group I can describe in more detail. I'm exploring finding something like that in my area. Maybe something like that would appeal to you, too. I benefit from having group support & building my toolbox of coping strategies, so I think it could be good for me. Good luck to you!

I like to Internet shop instead, I get a thrill from putting things in my basket. Most of the time I never actually buy anything, just going through the motions helps, but if I want a real treat I buy little things like accessories, gadgets etc. in the under $2 category on aliexpress with free shipping.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It is good to know that I am not on my own, and I appreciate your ideas and suggestions.

Jnananamaste, I am starting to think that I could use some professional help with this, just because it has been part of my life for so long. I will have to look into finding a group like the one you are talking about, or something similar. Best of luck on your own journey, and I hope that it goes great for you! The group sounds like it could be really helpful.
