Beer of Whiskey?

What's better to have whiskey, straight. Maybe 6-7 oz. 8 max. Or 3-4 dark porters. Definitely not light beer so in assuming whiskey would be less calories but just making sure. Thanks

Usually a hard liquor is less calories. I'm a tequila and light beer drinker. Light beers range from 80-110cals/bottle (regular are closer to 150-170 and darks are even more) One ounce of tequila is between 60-75cals.... and then whether your drinking straight (my preference) or mixing, that can impact if you use anything that isn't 0cals like diet pops.0

Guiness is only 120 calories, about 10 more than budwater light.0

If I had to choose whiskey all day. But I'm not thinking of the calories lol. I homebrew beer I guess I better figure out how to find the calories...but I am a whiskey lover. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to whiskey.0

I came here to say the same. I love beer and whiskey, and I refuse to choose one over the other. A little whiskey, a little beer. Actually, I'd start with a whiskey, then proceed to a beer flight: lager, IPA, porter, stout0 -
Bourbon-barrel-aged stout! Win-win.2

I don't like beer so I am going whiskey.0

Russian Imperial Stout.. Yummy yummy0

My 3oz of Bulleit rye comes in just under 220 cals. Any more than that and I feel it in my head the next day, but most nights I actually have a beer (I like IPAs, 250ish cals for 12oz) while I'm prepping dinner and the bourbon as a nightcap.0

Wine. You're welcome.3

No wine-ing.
Whiskey for me, bourbon with soda water and lime is delightful, like a whiskey-ade. I don't like beer, personally, despite the influx of very trendy, delightful little craft breweries around here.0 -

Whiskey hands down.1

Bourbon County stout from Goose Island is the most well known. My go-to is from Central Waters in Amherst, Wisconsin. I know Founders, Lexington, Stone, and Anderson Valley all make versions, and I know many more brewers do as well.0 -

Whisky! Consumed neat. Nice thing is you appreciate its flavor and that also helps reduce eating while enjoying a drink. It's also one of the lowest calorie alcohol choices out there consumed neat (or with a few drops of water or ice)
When I have beer I almost always start looking for salty snacks right away.0 -

I still like mine on the rocks. But I'm firmly n the "both" camp. Just that it has to be better than what I used to consume as I'm not drinking as much so I damn well better enjoy what I do drink. Guinness or a good Porter for beer and something expensive on the Scotch side. Worst is Crown Royal and Coke zero.
Also Gin. Found a nice, tasty local gin a few years back that is really good.0 -
Someone posted the light beers in another thread.

Guinness is only 109.
Woo hoo

Either one would knock me out pretty well, but perhaps that's the plan!
(The best craft porters can be much higher in calories and alcohol than the generic 200kcal listed in MFP.)0 -
This seems handy for craft beer lovers:

Those 3-4 porters are going to have a lot more alcohol than even 8 oz of whiskey, most likely. The higher the ABV and the maltier the beer, the more calories it's going to have.
That said, I hate whiskey, and 6 oz of it would knock me on my *kitten*. Between the two, I'd be tipsy after the beer but flat-out hammered after the whiskey. I'd go for the beer, and I still wouldn't drive. If you're going to drink that much, please be safe and smart!0 -
I seldom drink, but when I do I opt for whiskey as it tends not to bloat me the following day and makes for a good sipper.0

The easiest rule by far for calories in beer:
kcal = abv% * 2.5 * fluid ounces
So a 12 ounce pour of a 6% abv beer would be 6*2.5*12=180 kcal0 -
Gin and tonic. Bailey's Irish Cream in coffee. Jack Daniel's, neat. I have celiac disease so beer is no go, but occasionally a hard apple cider is in order.0

A 12-ounce serving of Guinness sets you back 125 calories - so 500 calories for 4.
One shot of Jameson's (1 oz) is 69 - 72 calories depending where you look so 8 would be about 560 calories.
Honestly there is little difference but I think there is more nutritional benefit to Guinness - but I doubt that really enters into this discussion.0 -
The continuation of this thread is really making me want a drink. I wound up skipping them all last week and drinking water as I watched the game.
Maybe this week it will be one of these options.
Thanks!0
