Okay this is still in the early stages of planning but I want to bike from Coast to Coast in roughly 45 days. I was thinking of doing a group of bikers from MFP. This would take around a year to prepare and roughly $4000 to $5000 for food and hotel stay. Would also like to find a support staff of two people following with supplies. The more there is the less it will cost. You will be biking an average of 80 miles a day and need at least 50 days off for travel. I just am putting this out there to see what kind of interest there is. It will be an experience of a lifetime. Send me a message if you are interested. and I will get names together

i would love to do this, but would you consider camping a long the way instead of hotels to save on costs?

Absolutely I would prefer camping as much as possible. It would be a group decision. especially with a support van following and everyone working together we could camp much of it.

    Cameron,
I would LOVE to experience something like this but I am afraid that my 4 children will prevent me from doing so. I really hope that you can make this happen. May I suggest though that you camp along the way instead of hotel? If you have someone following in a car, they can set up a camp along the way, hit the grocery store for you all and have cooking supplies available. Sure, stay in a hotel from time to time but I bet you could save a ton of money camping. A camp site is $30/night and usually can hold 6-10 people easily. State parks are cheaper, yet require a sticker for the day. It would be awesome to stay in state parks some of those nights.

Would need to be a good road bike, currently I have a giant mountain bike. But may need around $1200 for a good road bike ready for the challenge. I understand the money and time commitment. I am a firefighter making less the $45,000 a year. But I know I can make this dream a reality.

Go for it! I don't think you would want an old lady trekking along with you in her brand new safety yellow port-a-trike (I just placed the order this morning; it will be here in about 5 weeks and~~~it's made in the USA). You're starting off in Louisiana where it's super hot & humid right now. You must love the heat to be doing it now. I hope it goes well for you.

A 68 year old woman just did it. and no will start off in Oregon and end in NH or start in California and end in Georgia

That sounds amazing!! You don't know how much I am currently wracking my brains to try and figure out how my husband and I would be able to afford this (including flights to the States as we are UK based...) Alas though 2012 is the year for paying off the credit card to allow us to do something similar in 2013 / 2014.....good luck though and I hope that you get a fantastic team behind you.... Vx

That would be awesome. I don't know if I could join but would definitely be something I would love to do.

You should also check out the MFP Cycling club.. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/266681-mfp-cycling-club?page=7#posts-3859908

tipusnr did something like this, although it wasn't the distance you're talking about. He's an experienced cyclist and would probably be able to give some great info and tips on setting this up.

I am thinking of doing something similar next year; a friend and I are going to try to ride from the head of the Mississippi to the tail where it enters the gulf of Mexico. 3500 miles roughly. I'm currently biking to drop more weight first. I can handle 30 to 40 miles a day now, but I need to drop another 70 or 80 pounds before I begin the journey.

Can I ask what dates you are penciling in for the journey? If it coincides with our Summer break it could be do-able...

That is a dream of mine and I may need to seriously consider joining you! For a trial run, you can come join RAGBRAI. (Bike ride across Iowa). It starts this Sunday and ends the next Saturday. I've done that (or part of it) about 6 times. Just a week of it is an amazing experience and if you try it once, you're hooked!!!!

GAH!! I want to do this! Unfortunately I have 4 kids, 13 and under. sheesh. I don't think I can get 50 days vacation from them. You would have had me 15 years ago, so let me know if you're doing it again in another 10 or so.

    *sigh*
