I use a BodyMedia FIT and it works great. Much more accurate than a HRM. It's water-resistant but I wouldn't go swimming in a pool with one.0

I'm very happy with my Polar FT4. Although I haven't tested the theory, the user manual says it's suitable for "swimming and bathing."0

I'm looking for one too. Does anyone own a Garmin 405? Does that track calories?0

Polar FT4 - LOVE0

I have a Polar F6. It has a watch & a chest strap. It's waterproof & keeps track of time exercised, heart rate, calories burned, whether or not you're in your heart rate zone (this is customizable or you can take the ones set for you based on your age, height, weight, sex). I paid $90 after shipping & handling from Amazon.com. I've had it for a year and LOVE it.0

Walmart sells a Sportline for 37.98.
ETA: This is a great bang for your buck. You have to be sure to set it up properly or it won't work right. But, that is tha same with all HRM.0 -
Another Polar FT4 lover here!0

I just bought my Polar FT4 off of Amazon for $60, and I think they may even be down around $50 now. Yes, I have worn it in the pool. Comments I have heard from others is just don't push the buttons under water. I really like it. Like you, I am mainly just interesting in how many calories I am burning while exercising.0

Just got my Polar FT4 a few weeks ago and I love it. I didn't want anything fancy, just something that showed me an accurate calorie burn, and this does the trick. Mine was a gift, but I think it was purchased on Amazon for around $60.0

I have a Polar F6 and love it. The waterproof is nice for when I'm swimming, washing my hands/face, or even just now when I was out by my dock (wearing it as a watch) and wanted to hose it down. You can also feel free to track your calories while gardening, or doing other outside chores, and then rinse yourself down without worry. I definitely recommend it!0

Using Polar FT4 - calculate calories and keeps up to 99 sessions. The chest straps helps it keep a more accurate reading. And its waterproof.0

Garmin 405 tracks calories only based on speed. (the gps has to be working, doesn't track calories burned based on HR)
Garmin 405CX tracks calories based on HR.
(I have a 305, i just use the average heart rate and calculate my estimated calories from a HR to carlorie conversion website)0 -
I have a polar ft4.. comes with the chest strap and I got mine off of ebay for 56 bucks. You can swim with it but I haven't tried it yet. It asks for your height, weight, and gender.0

After trying 5 diffferent ones the last couple weeks and returning them all, I finally had an official test at the gym and chose to keep my Polar FT7. The Timex and Sportlines I tried (both with and without chest straps) were way off. Also, if you're female you may want to make sure you get one made for women -- 2 that I tried couldn't read my heardbeat becasue the strap was too wide/big. This polar is more comfortable anyway as the strap is cloth and it was still right around $100 at BestBuy but only about $80 on Amazon.
Here is a good article to consider before making your decision:

Polar RX300sd. I love mine! It has a foot pod which helps track my outdoor runs. It calculates calories burned and tells me how much time I spent in each heart rate zone. I do triathlons so knowing how long I spent in each zone is tremendously helpful!0

Great feedback, THANKS
Im seeing a lot of happiness with the Polar FT40 -
Polar FT60 (more on the expensive side but very accurate) calculates calories and vo2max!!!!!!!!!! Highly recommendable!0

Go with a Polar and read the article that a previous poster posted. HRM's do not directly calculate calories burned.. nothing in the world can do that. It can only give you a more accurate estimation of calories burned.
I personally have a Polar FT7 and love it!0 -
I have a Polar F6, and It's great. I have had it a few years now, and have also worn it while swimming in swimming pools. It is recommended not to operate the watch buttons while in water, so I've stayed away from that and no problems.0
