Feel like I must be doing it wrong

Hi, I'm really new to this (second day) so this may just be beginners jitters but I feel like I'm eating way too much for so few cals. I've been weighing everything buy I've had three meals and snacks and I'm still only at 900ish calories for the entire day. I normally have no appetite because of depression and just eat the one massive (and I've now realised incredibly calorie dense) meal so this feels like an insane amount of food for me. Any of you guys ever deal with this when you first began?

Yes. I typically start a diet with my glycogen storage maxed out, so I can often eat fairly low calories for a couple days without repercussion. Bad idea to make a habit of it though.

Lots of people have this problem, because if you reduce all the high-calorie foods, what you are left with is very filling for very few calories. So people end up eating very few calories and then feeling full up.

Undereating is bad for you if you keep it up, though, so try adjusting your diet to include a few more calorie-dense foods to get you up to your calorie goal. This is especially important since you have appetite problems.

There have been threads about this before, so it must be relatively common. 900 calories does seem low for 3 meals and snacks though.

If you're eating pretty much all whole foods, then it's a lot of volume. As long as your calories are on point, you're good to go. Spread it out throughout the day so you're not eating in such large chunks. Also, if it's too much volume of food, work in some more calorie-dense foods to keep you from being overly full

I agree with the above. I suspect a lot of this has to do with the fact that many people will (purposefully or accidentally) start eating low-fat or "diet" foods. Definitely add some healthy fats and see what happens. Avocados/guac, nuts/nut butters, etc. Heck, even some chocolate will be fine, as long as you meet your calorie target. :)

Don't worry, you're not alone. Whenever I take a diet break, this happens to me too. I'll eat less (around 1,300) for about a week and then I'll be hungry again and eat the proper amount. Your body just has to get used to the changes that you're putting it through :)

For me before getting on track it was a lot of mindless eating. But now I spend a lot more time thinking about what I'm eating between planning, logging, measuring, and weighing. Food takes up less space in my life but more time.

It takes lots of trial and error to get it right. If you open up your diary, we can take a peek and see if it makes sense.

    1. Make sure you're logging accurately, preferably with a food scale and checking entries for accuracy.
    2. Don't be afraid of fat or carbs. They are both good for you in moderation.
    3. It gets easier once you've been doing it a bit longer and realize that you really can eat many of the same things as before, just in smaller quantities or less frequently.
    4. You got this! Just keep at it and learn along the way

Thanks everyone I feel a lot better after hearing all this :)
I've opened up my diary for those interested but as I said there's only two days worth of entries where I've been weighing everything so not too much to see. Hopefully I'll start getting into the swing of it soon enough :D

Who says you have to eat a few small meals? I regularly eat one large meal for the day. Intermittent fasting is a thing and is perfectly fine if that's what you want to do.
