Q: Keto diet and a substantial increase in heart rate while running

Looking for feedback from ketogenic dieters.

I'm starting my third week of low carb high fat ketogenic diet and have noticed a trend in my running in relation to my heart rate. Previously, when I would run at a comfortable pace, I would keep my heart rate in the 130s and it would creep up to the low 140s by the end of an hour or even 90 minute run. However, lately, at the same perceived intensity, my heart rate is at least 20 beats per minute higher. I'm not out of breath and I feel like I am running easy. If I wasn't wearing a heart rate monitor, I would never think my heart rate was in the low 160s.

Anyone have a similar trend? Is this short term? Will my average heart rate once again start dropping to normal rates?

Thank you

    Chat to your doctor..
    Better safe than sorry.
The heartrate issue may be unrelated to the diet.

I'm not sure what could be happening. I have been keto for a year and a half but haven't seen any increase in HR. I have tachycardia and it's seemed to improve actually.

I go through phases of being in keto for awhile and being out. I know it takes a good month for my whole body to fully adjust to the switch. I do crossfit and feel like I am going to die the first couple weeks while getting back into keto. After a month, back to normal. I'm not sure of my actual heart rate, so only gauging it on my level of fatigue.
  • This is likely due to poor hydration. Low carb diets have a diuretic effect. Increase your sodium, make sure to get plenty of potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin D. I CANNOT stress this enough.

I've run a couple times since and haven't had the HR as high but the average is coming down nicely. It may have been just a temporary bump. It may have been a variety of issues including fatigue, electrolytes, or water. We'll see how the next couple of runs turn out.

    Thank you
