long distant walkers?

So I am going to go travelling after I finish uni! Waheeeeeeey! Total dream and I am gonna do it. It's not for a while yet so I need to get fit and healthy for that.
I have about 21lbs to lose to get to my GW... not too bothered about reaching it as long as I am fit and healthy that is all that matters.
Anyway you long distant walkers out there...
how far should I walk? Should I walk daily? How much weight would I lose doing so? Does speed matter?

I would buy a weight vest ( I LOVE MINE) and wear that when you walk...you can get them as light as 5 pounds or as heavy as 45, but whatever you buy it will usually let you increase or decrease the weights added to the vest. I lost a ton of weight (about 20 pounds in four months) when I wore mine preparing for the pack test (fire fighter fitness test), and I think it's because it keeps you at that fat-burning intensity level (which is quite low). I walked three miles a day, five days a week...which isn't really long distance but it does take a while to do (between 45 and 60 minutes). Have fun with it!0

Well, I *want* to be a long distance walker. Ever since I read King's "the long walk." I'm really out of shape, so I'm starting slow, but may I recommend...Vibram shoes. I just got a pair a couple of weeks ago and it really *does* feel like you're walking barefoot. I think I will be able to walk a loooong way in these suckers.
That said, you don't burn a ton of calories walking. My current theory is that what you eat controls your weight loss, you work out to look good sans clothing ;-)
So try walking. See how long you can walk, how fast you can walk, and adjust accordingly. I overdid it recently and didn't pay a huge price for it because it's not tough on the joints or the smaller muscles. Just keep in mind that walking is for your lower body, it won't fix your arms.
Good luck and keep me informed on your progress!
