How bad is sugar?

I am trying to do 2 lbs a week weight loss and just started yesterday (Which probably wasn't for the best since I ended up having a cheat day with wine) anyways,even before the wine I had done perfect calorie wise but gone way over on sugar...does anyone know if it will hinder weightloss if you have more sugar during the week than you are supposed to if you stay at or below the calories you should be at? I am 5'6 161 lbs and MFP gave me a daily calorie goal of 1200 calories to lose 2 lbs a week.

Do you have a medical reason to reduce sugar?
If not, it's not 'bad'.
ETA with your stats 2lbs a week is a bit to steep and you risk muscle loss2 -

If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. Even if every single calorie comes from sugar. It isn't necessarily good for you health-wise, but it will not hinder your weight loss.1

No, and I couldn't go on a super low crab diet if I wanted (I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar not related to diabetes) but on the calorie suggestion from MFP I began recording my food for a meal and went over the sugar suggestion (the meal included a serving of white rice, a banana,gluten free chicken strips and a serving of 100% grape juice (trying to up my vitamin C since fighting a cold,doubt it will help though), just didn't know if the calories or sugar was more important. I thought it was ok to lose up to 2 lbs a week. Is it ok to lose 2 lbs a week if also working out? I have been doing cardio 5 days a week for a few weeks and this week started 3 days a week circuit including pushups,squats,step ups,reverse lunges and one other thing that a trainer showed us but don't know what the name of it is ..but only 3 sets of 12 of each thing,just a beginner.0 -

You've got 20-30lbs to lose, so you should ideally be aiming to lose 1lb per week.2 -

You've got 20-30lbs to lose, so you should ideally be aiming to lose 1lb per week.
Ok, I didn't know that, I thought it was safe for anyone to lose 1-2 lbs a week, but guessing it depends on how overweight you are? For my height I am actually just 6 lbs "overweight" but 155 is the bigger side of a healthy weight for a 5'6 woman and I wanted to be on the slimmer side of a healthy weight for my height.0 -
Yes, the 2 lb/week rate is generally reserved for those who have upwards of 100 lbs to lose. Also keep in mind that as you approach your goal weight, you'll want to jump down from 1 lb/week to .5 lb.1

the less you have to lose the less you should be trying to lose per week. so yes,it does depend on how overweight you are. if you have less than 25lbs you should be setting your loss at .5lb a week, you can do 1 lb a week if you want to lose 30lbs,but once you get down to 20-25lbs to lose you want to reset it and put .5 lb/week.1 -
I'm a big guy, and older, without sugar problems and for sure not wanting to develop any, so I track my sugar intake as well as overall carbs. I lowered my MFP sugar macro target so that when I do overshoot a bit, I don't get all crazed.
Sugar sneaks in a lot of ways in a lot of foods. Your grape juice, for instance (trinityann), probably packed in a few grams. I made a nice, healthy butternut squash and apple soup this last week, which, with both apples and apple cider, spiked my sugar intake for the couple of days the batch lasted.1 -
@trinityann8423 if you dont have any health issues to reduce sugar then you can always switch your diary to track fiber or something else instead. totally up to you. even if you go over sugar as long as you are in a deficit you will lose weight2

Thank you all so much for the info, I am new to MFP (started using it Tuesday I believe) and love the diary and nutrition facts but especially the community forums, everyone has been so nice and helpful,especially love the success stories and all of the support shown to each other0
