Ask an american where they are from and they will likely say some random string of letter that to an american probably means something, like TX or WC or NC, or sometimes they say the states name, but that assumes that I know all 50+ states and territories and that these are in the US somewhere.

Ask anyone outside america and you will likely get a state PLUS the country. Like my answer to the OP's question would be NSW, Australia or south of Sydney, Australia, because the person asking may be Australian, american, chinese, german or any of the other 200 or so countries with internet access.

No states here, but my country is Wales and my county is Rhondda Cynon Taf!
