Hi guys,
Looking at my progress pics, I can't tell if I've had progress or it's just different lighting. I had a cheat day yesterday and feel pretty gross and awful...

What is like a step by step process to getting rid of belly fat and toning my midsection? I'm pretty small I just really want to be more toned and less "puffy"

That is absolutely progress. The difference in those two pictures is dramatic.

The only way to get rid of belly fat is to get rid of overall body fat. BUT, you can tone your belly muscles more so that they show more.

Hard to say. I tend to look lean one week, then puffy the next, etc. I can't really tell what is going on from these pics.

No you can't. You can lose fat, but you can't "tone belly muscles". That doesn't mean anything.

It's hard to tell. I can go from having visible abs to a pot belly after one meal. Water retention will be more noticeable for women who are under 20% bf. I suggest the thread @jemhh linked for the best advice on this. It's what I followed.

Yes progress. You can't really spot fix anything. In regards to "toning" and being less "puffy", pick up heavy things and put them down...that's how you change body composition.

Believe it or not, she’s 11 pounds HEAVIER (142 pounds) in the picture on the right (May 2011) compared to the picture on the left (131 pounds, October 2010).

So belly muscles are unique in that way? Completely untoneable? And all those people doing ab work, obliques, etc., are wasting their time? Thanks for clearing that up!

You can strengthen and build muscles. But you cannot make the same amount of muscle more visible by exercising it. You either need to add more muscle or lose the fat that is covering it.

And yeah, a lot of the people doing ab work are wasting their time because what they really need to do is lose weight.

If the pic on the right is the most recent..... Definitely progress! Are your pants looser? That's another easy way to notice your own progress.

If you're happy with your weight, but want more visibly defined muscle, you might consider recomp.

Muscle has tone, you cannot change the tone of muscle. You can lose fat to reveal muscle, you can gain fat and muscle, or you can stay the same. A lot of people doing ab work are doing useless exercise, yes.

Well if she's like never done a sit up in her life it's theoretically possible to build muscle while still losing fat if she eats adequate protein wile in a mild caloric deficit and trains her core to make her stomach appear more toned (look up "newbie gains").

O P I'd say do full body strength training along with some good core work and get your diet/calories/macros on point. Try taking waist measurements with a tape measure to check progress. Also take progress pictures but choose a specific location, pose, lighting, maybe even the same outfit- and take them the same way under the same conditions, each time so it's a lot easier to see the changes.

Comparing these 2 pics I see a big difference, but you could just be puffing your stomach out in one pic and sucking in and changed the lighting in the other one and they could be taken the same day for all we know. This is for YOU so make it easier for yourself to track your progress by taking better pictures and measuring.

I'm pretty versed on newbie gains. Still.
