Question on low carb diet

I've been on low carb 50 g a day for awhile. I initially lost about a lb a week then totally stalled. After researching fake sugar and caffeine I completely cut them out of my diet. I saw a naturopath a week ago. She said I was not eating enough fiber and not drinking enough water. So per her recommendation I drink half my weight in water and eat 25 to 30 g of fiber a day mainly from green veggies. We are trying this because my metabolism is soooo slow. I've gained 4 lbs in a week and I've never eaten healthier. I have way more energy for sure and I do work out regularly. Is this normal? I'm frustrated.. I'm 52 and peri menopausal. Any advice?

- Do you count calories?
- Do you weigh your food on a scale?
- Naturopaths are quacks, go see a registered dietitian instead.
- Drinking half you weight in water each day is waaaaaaayyyy too much.
- Did you have your metabolism tested to determine it was low?
- Eating healthier does not = fat loss, you need to control calories.

I would probably disagree with this, but the rest is very important. OP, weight loss all comes down to energy balance. Counting just carbs is important for some, but others isn't not enough. Calories, regardless of source, is what is important.
Additionally, if you are like me, fats may not even fill you up, so it's quite easy to over eat. Which is more reason you have to be careful with your intake. I can easy pound down several handfuls of nuts which can equal well over 400 calories.0 -

If you're counting and measuring everything you're taking in, what are the net carbs you're taking in per day? I know for me that if I'm at or exceed 30-50g per day I don't lose nearly as fast as when I'm at 25g per day or less. Make sure you're taking in a good amount of healthy fats per day too - just decreasing carbs isn't the answer with this particular WOE - it's about taking in more good fats as well. Adding olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc will be a huge help. I drink about 60-80oz water per day and my weight loss has been very good and steady. You don't need to over do it with water unless you're extremely active. It looks to me like you may not even in ketosis at this point. I would look into lowering your carbs, increasing your good fat intake, drinking more water, taking your supplements (krill / potassium / multivitamin, etc) and trusting the system - don't obsess over your calories for 2-3 weeks. Stalls are totally normal. If you're following the system and you go two weeks without loss, you're in a real stall. This system has worked for me but as always, YMMV. Good luck!0 -
Drinking too much water can cause low sodium which can be life threatening. Please consult your general physician before you continue. I am a firm believer that you can eat or drink anything in moderation. Like mentioned above weigh and measure your food to get the correct calorie count and walk walk walk! Good luck!0

I just started low carb I'm doing 20 carbs a day no more than 1500 calories.. I burn about 1800 a day so I try to be closer to 1300 calories... i have heard to have a 500 calorie deficit ... I'm not very active I plan to be but live in cold climate ... I lost 75 lbs in 2004 on low fat diet and kept it off but quit smoking in 2009 and have been battling weight since... in the past year have gained 20 lbs0

P.s. I also hear that a little weight gain is expected in the beginning and to be patient because your body is used to burning carbs as fuel and it has to rehear itself to run off fat ... one lady gained 30 lbs and they kept telling her to be patient and don't give up and about 6 months later she started losing pounds left and right... if your not active try doing squats every once in a while like maybe 20 every time you finish going to the restroom0

Not sure what "fake sugar" is (I'm assuming you mean artificial sweeteners?) It's almost impossible to cut them out completely. And their probably better than processed sugar. BILLIONS of people around the world consume caffeine everyday. Cutting it out of your diet will do nothing for your weight. A typical adult only needs about 40 ounces of water a day to stay healthy. If it's hot or your exercising vigorously you may need more. HALF your weight in ounces isn't needed.

I'm hoping OP means that she's drinking half her weight in ounces of water? That's a safe formula many people use. So, if somebody weighs 150 lbs, that would be 75 ounces of water (a little over 9 glasses of water/day).1 -

A person's body will burn fat and sugar, not matter the composition of nutrients. Substrate utilization might lean towards fat vs glycogen, but in doesn't matter; and a point of semantics, a person tends to burn more stored fats, especially while sleeping. The feeling you get going keto, is largely due to the reduction in carbs and electrolytes, which the imbalance of electrolytes is what causes ketoflu.
If a person is rapidly gaining weight, that is not a plan they should stay on. Or if they do, they should learn how to get it under control.0
