Low-sodium diet

Curious if anyone is on a low-sodium diet for medical reasons. I am for possible Meneire's (sp?) Disease (more like a disorder). Should know for sure in about 2wks if I have it. I am down 11.6lbs since starting this on Nov 7th. I do wonder, if I don't have this condition, & stop the diet, how difficult will it be to keep that weight off & keep going down? Hmm...this has been really good for controlling quantity!

My GP told me to follow the DASH diet because I have HBP. I keep my sodium under 2300 mg a day, which is the recommended amount for people. I've swapped out for low sodium foods, don't eat as much high sodium foods (or fit them in my day), and eat more fruits and veggies.
If sodium makes you retain a lot of water/fluid, then not keeping it low might impact your weight loss. As long as you eat less than you burn, it shouldn't be a problem. I lost 179# and don't have a problem keeping it off.
I would follow your doctor's advice about whether sodium will have an impact on your (possible) condition.0 -
I watch sodium in what I eat although not for medical reasons. What's interesting to me is how much taste buds can change. Now if I eat something higher in sodium on occasion, I cannot believe how salty it tastes to me. I will have a margarita and wake up feeling like I inhaled half the ocean. Or my lips will feel tingly or like my tongue is burned.
I look for lower sodium options in things like sauces. If something is higher in sodium, I will still have from time to time but it does make me retain water.0 -
I am for HBP. Your are right...it will make you eat less for a while until you figure out how to get taste back in to your food. I have found that spicy foods will mask the low sodium.
Yes...if you go back to eating a higher sodium level the water weight will come back. If I have a high sodium day I might put back on 5lbs of water overnight. The it takes a few days to lose it again.
Here is a site that I have used for low sodium recipes. I have tried a few. I fix the curry chicken and the kung pao chicken almost every week.
She gives you a recipe for soy sauce replacement. I have used it a few times but I am lazy and just go for the lower sodium soy sauce instead.

Thanks for the link! I use Coconut Aminos as a non-soy "soy" sauce. It's pretty good! Valentina's salsa picante hot sauce is very low. I use Mrs. Dash seasonings, Mrs. Dash no salt taco seasoning as well, and a lot of seasonings and herbs.0

I do have some other undiagnosed medical issues as well as hypothyroidism. Sprained my ankle over 3yrs ago & have had swelling in that foot & ankle ever since. Had tonsillectomy last May because of obstructive sleep apnea. Lost 15lbs during that recovery & gained it all back pretty quick. :-(
It seems like the foods with the higher amounts of sodium are also processed foods. I'm a finicky eater and have 3 young kids so this was difficult and depressing the first few weeks until the scale started to go down.
I was told to stay under 1500mg a day.0 -
We eat low sodium at my house because my husband's doctor recommended it for HIM to control blood pressure. It has worked well for him and we all feel better with less sodium so we all eat that way. I have found that when we have more sodium at a meal (now that we've been eating this way for literally years), I feel like I've been hit by a truck afterward. It's like my body hates the excess sodium and is telling me so. You may experience something similar if you switch back...everyone is different, of course. Just a head's up.0

UPDATE: I do NOT have Meneire's so I was told to go back to eating normal. A few pounds have come back. It has recently been discovered that my pulse goes up when my vestibular system is provoked. I'm wondering if I should go back to low-sodium but not as restricted as I was.1

I have high BP and I am on a low sodium diet. My doctor doesn't believe in fad diets, he just advises to eat smart...eat healthy. No canned goods, lots of fresh. The easiest way is to shop the putter perimeter of the store and stay out of the isles and frozen food section. Doing this and putting down the salt shaker and I got my BP under control.0
