Is a pound a week to lofty a goal?

I want to try to lose a pound a week. I don't know if that's too much or not

How much weight do you have to lose? If you're already at a healthy weight, it's probably too ambitious and you should aim for 0.5 pounds/week. If you have more than 20 pounds to lose, it's probably fine.3

It depends on how much you have to lose . If you only have 5 pounds, it may be difficult. If you have 50, it isn't too much.1

I think it really depends on your current weight/height ratio. Take me for example, I am 130lbs at 5'8", a pound a week for me would be very unhealthy, I am looking to lose about 8 in a month at a health rate. However, if you are starting much heavier, then your body will shed weight faster because it has more to lose, like if I were 200+ then I would expect to lose more a week/month.

A pound a week is fine. Just remember that weight loss isn't linear.1

I'm currently losing about 1.5 to 2kg a week with a lot of exercise and a calorie intake of about 1300-1500 a day but I have a lot to lose.1

As others have stated, 1lb/week sounds about right for the amount of weight you have to lose. As you approach your goal weight (w/in 10-15 lbs or so), it'll be a good idea to lower your weekly loss rate to .5lb/week.
Also, good on you for being concerned about losing weight too quickly. Many people come to MFP with the idea that they'll lose 2 or more lbs/week, even if their stats indicate they should start out at a slower, less aggressive, and more realistic pace.1 -
Well I figured if I lost too quickly it might also cause my milk to dry up I am breastfeeding2

Then make sure you factor that into your calorie goal. If it's exclusive breastfeeding, that consumes about 500 calories/day. You can either "log" negative calories for that in your food diary or just set your calorie goal higher (e.g. tell MFP you want to maintain your weight and create the deficit by breastfeeding).3

This! I think this is why most people fail when trying to 'diet'. 1) it needs to be a lifestyle change (for most people) and 2) baby steps, change one small thing at a time. It will be easier in the long run to keep it going if you make small changes that your body isn't going to try and resist. I know if I were to cut out 100% of the bad things at once, I would crave it and end up breaking my routine. You got this!!3 -

I wouldn't recommend this approach to the OP, especially since she is breastfeeding. Supplements could be transferred to baby via breastfeeding - not good.4 -

Sounds fine to me.
As a reference, these are good guidelines to follow for safe weight loss:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal3 -
1# a week to get from 185 down to 130 is a very conservative/achievable goal.
I lost 36# from 196 down to 160 in 6 months. Averaged 6#/month - - more the 1st couple of month and less in the last 2.1 -

Easiest weight I ever lost was doing WW while BF. At 5'6, with the points I was allotted that I could eat 1800-1900 per day. Those last 20 baby pounds fell off plus more. And I was not really exercising at that time.
But I did have a super champ of a breastfeeder, hours and hours a day. That may have had something to do with it!1 -
I personally think it's a myth that it depends on how much you have left. I know tons of people that have lost 1 or 2/week right up till goal, with counting cals and exercise. Now if you are mentally trying to learn to maintain or you are feeling cranky or hungry or some other reason you want to slow it down, yes, fine. But it is purely opinion that this is the "right" way. If 1/week works, you can do it right up to goal. Your cals will adjust as you lose but so may your true appetite. Best of luck!5

To lose 2 pounds per week you have to create a deficit of 1,000 calories a day. This is safely done when one has @ a hundred pounds to lose but not so much when one is near goal.
Say I weighed 150 pounds and wanted to lose 10 pounds. Maintenance calories for my age and height are 1650 per day. In order to lose 2 pounds per week I would net 650 calories. Does this really sound like a good idea?
Also, have you observed these "tons of people that have lost 1 or 2/week right up till goal" in real life? My neighbor talked about her fast weight loss when she was losing, but not when she gained it all back shortly thereafter. If I only knew her online, I wouldn't have known about the rebound.2
