Is canned tuna bad for weight loss?

Hi guys,

The only reason I ask is because most weight loss clinics restrict the amount of tuna you can eat a week; for instance, twice a week.

    Really? Im surprised. I did not know that. That makes me wonder now.. I eat tuna four times a week... If anyone has any more info please post! :smile:

    I do not restrict mine. i go through tuna phases. LOL I use Can 95% of the time in water not oil

    I steer clear of the oil packed variety - go for water packed if you want to save some calories.. I've never heard of restricting tuna as part of a weight loss regime, unless like other poster indicated it's due to mercury content in the fish. If you like it, I'd say eat away. Lost of good omega 3

    It is because tuna contains crap loads of mercury which certainly is not good for you...

    This is why it should be restricted somewhat. Larger fish tend to absorb, and contain, more mercury.

    I think it has to do with the mercury in it. I usually have a can a week or so. If we are low on healthy foods, I'll have 2 cans a week at most. It can be bad if you mix it with a large amount of mayo. I usually smash up half an avocado and mix together then add some pepper. Much more flavor than mayo and a lot healthier.

    Tuna is restricted because of the mercury content in it. There's a lot of research that preaches to both sides, I personally think you would need to eat A LOT of tuna to get mercury poisoning. I've also read that apparently "Chunk" tuna has less mercury than "Solid"

    My nutritionist told me to eat tuna as often as I wanted because it is low fat and high protein.

    :smile: good source of protein. Stick to the tuna in water and not oil, and don't over do it (mercury and sodium). But in general I would say a good thing, rather than bad.

    So the clinics have a reason for it I guess... per the chart, I can eat 1 can of chunk light tuna every 3 days..

    Love this link... just checked the chart out... Guess I don't need to eat tuna for lunch Monday through Friday... Yikes...
