I'd love to get my body used to smaller portions but whenever I do I feel so ill with hunger, what can I do?

ill with hunger - describe? what is your daily goal? what are you reducing it from (and to)?
for me smaller portion would be instead of a bag of potato chips - weigh out a serving size; instead of a huge bowl of cereal, weigh out what is 1 portion size1 -
Fill up on raw veggies and drink water to curb that hunger.0

Say if I have a serving size of oatmeal 40g I would by the time I get to work about an hour later be feel so hungry I'd feel nauseated0

By ill with hunger do you mean you eat your fill, and while still at the table you wish you had more? Or do you mean during the hours between meals?
The body takes several minutes from first bite/sip before your brain starts to register a feeling of fullness. Try drinking 8oz of water 15 minutes before your meal, so your brain will start to feel full at the same time as you start to eat.0 -
What are your calories overall looking like? Are you hitting your targets? How aggressive is your deficit? How much do you need to lose? Are you exercising and if you are, are you accounting for that activity with more calories?0
-
Is that all you eat for breakfast? What else (how many calories) do you eat in a normal day? What is your height and weight?0
-
Part if it could be eating too little (that 40 g of oats is the dry weight, not the cooked weight.) Part of it could be the types of food you are eating. Protein tends to make people feel more full, as do higher fiber foods and for some people fat helps as well. For example, you could have oats with raspberries and a bit of milk and it may be more satisfying.2

How do you make the oatmeal? With water or with milk? Do you add some fruit? What are the protein/fat/carbs breakdown when you look at the entire prep?
You might be a person that needs more protein in the morning.1 -

You'll need to play around with what you eat to help you feel full longer for similar calories. if oatmeal doesn't do it, maybe a couple of eggs would.
And I say this as someone who ignores what I just said. I have my oatmeal and glass of milk in the morning and am hungry by 10. I've given up trying to chase down a better breakfast as the oatmeal and milk is so simple for me when I'm not yet thinking. I plan a snack mid morning (right about now actually) and it holds me until lunch.
But I don't feel sick, just hungry.1 -
I'm aiming towards 1800-1900 calories because my job is so active, though I've not been losing much, um eight pounds off my target weight, I'd usually have 50g oatmeal with two spoons peanut butter and some flax but need to eat again at ten, but it seems once I have one snack I keep feeling hungry0

Protein, fat and fiber are things that people find satiating. However, it's a different combination for everyone.
I don't find oatmeal (fiber) by itself holds me very long. Try making it with milk (for protein) or add a few chopped nuts, or nut butter (for fat). Some people like their oatmeal with a fried egg on top (protein & fat). Breakfast for me is at least 250 calories.
You may need to tweak some of your regular meals just a bit, but you'll get the hang of it.0 -
This is just me...but I have found it helpful. I usually mix some fiber with water. It does wonders to curb my appetite. Now you cant chug fiber of course...but it might be a tool in the toolbelt.0

So these are just three threads you have started recently asking similar variations of this. Have you followed up on any of the advice you have received?2 -
Why would it be as soon as u have my ten o clock snack I'm wanting something else about 11-11.30? I usually have protein bar or shake, fruit or yogurt0

Have you considered Intermittent Fasting? You could set up a feeding window that allowed you to skip breakfast and first snack (since you say once you start eating, you keep feeling hungry), start with lunch and have larger portions (since you'll now have the calories from breakfast and first snack available).1 -

Did you finish logging your food Tuesday? You were 990 calories under your goal. I'd feel ill with hunger too.0 -

I think that is why people tend to fail, is they are used to the mental imagery and the habits of eat a whole plate, large portions, etc. So when they see appropriate portions they feel like they aren't getting enough mentally and maybe emotionally, but physically it is more than enough calories. For me, this took a bit to overcome and start to change the mental image and attitude towards what I see on a plate.
Just takes times really.0 -

In my opinion, I feel if you add a protein to your breakfast you will feel fuller much longer.0 -
When I have a carb-heavy breakfast, I'm always hungry again soon. I do best with an omelet or other protein/fat combo.
That said, I rarely eat breakfast and I'm fine until lunch. If I start on the carbs, I'm going to be hungry all day.0 -
