Running Diet

I am one of those people that absolutely NEEDS to have a strict diet plan to follow, sort of like a menu. I have been very successful using the Extreme Fat Smash by Ian Smith. Love it and would highly recommend it. However, now that I am trying to use running as a way to lose weight and keep motivated, I am concerned that the Extreme Fat Smash isn't the diet for me. I am training for a half marathon in 6 weeks, and I hope to lose about 15 lbs in that time as well. Does anyone know of any specific diet plan that is optimized for runners of long distances? I would really appreciate links to any specific menus.

Thank you!

Hey guys!!! I am a runner and I am training for a full. In my opinion we runners need carbs.... Quality carbs. So if u look at my diary I definitely get enough carbs. I shoot for 55-60% carb and 20-25 protein. I try to stick to quality fats.

Checkout halhigdon.com for info on this. Lots of good articles. U have to build ur muscle glycogen levels in order to sustain energy on long runs. Once it depletes u have to refill. :-)

Running makes me crazy hungry...so any research you do is going to tell you to probably eat more since you are training for long distance running. See if you can get a hold of the last couple of issues of Runner's World, I have a digital subscription and there was a diet in one of the last 2 or 3 issues, so sorry I can't remember which one right now!

Well, I have done several half and full marathons. Keep in mind, everyone is VERY individual. I find FOR MYSELF, I can not skimp on carbs. I really need whole grains to keep my glycogen levels up for distance, fueling my muscles. It's only the last 6 months that my weight has ballooned (7 lbs) up due to stress.

In general, I've always kept alchohol at a minimum as well as sweets. I usually give myself one day for wine/beer (I really have never been into hard alchohol) and usually have dessert that day as well. My splurge day.

Just think "BASIC WHOLE FOODS". Simple, unprocessed. Make sure you get adequate protein, lots of water, potassium (bananas) and calcium. That will help your body recover faster.

    Good luck!!!

There are some really great running blogs out there where they document what they eat on a daily basis. Here are a few of my favorites:
