Her doctor should refer her to a registered dietician/diabetes educator that should be able to tell her how she should be eating. My mother has it and she basically has to have no more than 45 carbs per meal. She can eat what she wants as long as she stays within the 45 carbs per meal. But your sister's doctor may want her to have a different amount.

I'm an RD and I do diabetes education. I agree that your doctor should refer her to at least an RD, if not a diabetes class. Absolutely do the class if that's an option. Usually friends and family are welcome to come to classes. Insurance will usually cover everything. Start out by cutting out sugary beverages- soda, sweet tea, juice, and sports drinks.

Lower carb choices, stick to complex carbs like whole wheats, sweet potatoes, brown rice, etc. Decrease processed carbs such as white potatoes, chips, white rice, pastas. Some vegetables have a higher glycemic index than others. Corn will spike your blood sugar must faster than green beans as an example.

Lose weight and exercise and keep carbs below 50% of calories. That took care of it for me In about 3 months.

When I was first diagnosed visualizing this plate was so helpful.

It's not so much about banning foods (except the sugary drinks. Those have to go) but about portioning out your food at every meal. It really helps to eat on a schedule with breakfast at the same time every day, timed small snacks and so on.

When your sister logs her food she will quickly associate certain meals with either feeling good or crappy a couple hours later.

That really helped steer me to foods and snacks that help me keep my sugars stable. High up on the list are hard boiled eggs, nuts, cheese, and edamame.

I was going to add that I found out early that one slice of pizza (with a generous leafy salad) is ideal, that two pieces was pushing it and three pieces guaranteed a bad sugar number in the morning.

I have diabetes and her Dr should be the one she asks about her diet first. I was diagnosed in Jan 2016. I had been "pre-diabetic" prior to that for probably some time. Last January, my Dr said he wanted to put me on Meds.

I told him ..No..I would go home, get active and lose weight. I did that..I maintain a more active lifestyle, and a healthier eating plan. I did NOT reduce my carbs or anything remotely close. I did cut my calories and basically have followed CICO.

It all varies. Today, I weigh 75+ pounds less, and all my tests are great..and I am on no meds.

I would suggest your sister, get active. Add exercise, walking, biking, anything, just be more active. Watch your calorie intake. Portion control...cut out soda if she is a soda drinker..

Other than that, trial and error and keep in consultation with your (her) Dr. I do not believe there is a one size fits all for diabetics.
