I've gained 2 pounds in two days even though I'm averaging 1300 cal a day and I'm very active! I'm packing in lots of Protein and being very careful with my carbohydrates and fat. I'm just not sure what's going on – any advice?

First post--did you just start? Welcome to MFP.

What you describe is totally normal. Weight can vary by a few pounds day to day due to water retention, food waste, hormones and time of the month (for women), etc. Daily measurements are fairly meaningless. You really have to look at weekly (or longer) trends to really know what is going on.

First of all I just want to say thank you for the warm welcome and outpouring of support, that right there helps a great deal! I'm not new to this app but I haven't used it for half a year during the course of which I gained about 10 pounds. My BMI is currently normal so I'm thinking that between higher sodium intake and some other factor this will be a temporary setback and certainly not a permanent one. I started a few weeks ago and lost roughly 4 pounds, so then to gain two of them back in such a short time was a little disconcerting. I'm gonna keep the sodium levels in check and keep pushing more water. I'll keep you posted- thx again!!

In addition to the excellent support given above, I recommend weighing yourself the same time of day when you do weight checks. I do mine first thing in the morning. My weight fluctuates a good 5 lbs through out the day.

Body weight fluctuates...the average human body is made up of 50-65% water...that's going to fluctuate normally and also be influenced by other things such as a higher sodium day, hormonal changes, etc. You're always going to have varying degrees of waste in your system at any given time, etc...

Weight fluctuates for reasons other than your underlying fat level. Above tools show you a trend as opposed to a snapshot.

Ugg girl I know how you feel I just got off my cheat day yesterday and I gained 3 pounds in one day ... If you added weights to your exercise routine it may have contributed to the weight gain but other then that I think it's water retention!!

I wouldn't bother trying to control it by watching your sodium intake. Weight fluctuations are not something you can control. They just are. The water comes, the water goes. My weight fluctuates 3-4lb from one day to the next and I don't bother trying to figure out why, I just keep going and look for the trend.

You need to detach from the number on the scale, it is a fickle friend.
