Why do you have bad days?

So I've been going to the gym properly now for 7 weeks and obviously my fitness has stepped up, but some days even if I feel I have the energy, I just can't quite do what I did the week before. For Example on the stair tredmill last week I did 20minutes over a thousands steps on level 6, but today I could bearly do 10 minutes on level 5! What gives surely you should progress? I'm obviously not too bothered as, as long as I feel I pushed myself I am happy. Just generally wondering

Fatigue. Sometimes you just need a break.

Lots of things can influence energy levels.

Sleep quality from one week to the next
Food intake -- more or less carbs or calories
Schedule -- busier one week then the other
Caffeine if you consume it, maybe you had more that day then the other
    Fatigue in general from stress

There are many days i can run 40 min at 10 x 4 times over 65 min
Other days i can only do 30 min at 5 min x 6 times over 65 min

Its not a sign of not progressing in my fitness though, progression in fitness should just be about getting to the gym or getting off of the couch more often then you used to and contributing to your health

I would add the female hormone cycle to that list. I have ways less energy the week of my period. All of that bleeding takes its toll on me. Those weeks, I call it a success just getting up and out of bed, so anything I do at the gym is a bonus.

Fluctuations in performance is normal, not a sign that you are having a "bad" day. During training, your body breaks down a little. During rest, it repairs itself, and gets stronger - if you don't break it down too much again before it has built itself sufficiently up again.

This happens to me too! I think a lot of factors come into it... Sleep is a big one, so is food intake (when I've had a lot of carbs my workouts are always more intense), also my general mood on the day I find is a big one. If I've had a long, tiring, stressful day at work and I get to the gym in a dull mood my motivation to go hard isn't as good as if I wake up chirpy and energetic on a Saturday and hit the gym.

Don't be too hard on yourself - just keep doing your best :)
