Hi, I'm a diabetic on Metformin. I have never been large, but due to genetic reasons I developed type two diabetes in my late 30s. I am very active, with one hour of intense cardio training 3 to 4 times a week alternated with weight training. I find muscle growth to be very slow and I have read several non academic articles about metformin interfering with muscle growth. I haven't seen any academic publications that support the idea. In fact I have seen academic articles that support the role of metformin in muscle building. So I am not sure what to believe. Would anyone be able to suggest the link or source that suggests that Matt Foreman opposes muscle building? Thanks!

I took metformin for about.a year. From my experience the biggest issue would be lack of appetite. At the time I was taking it I was trying to lose weight due to type 2 D, it helped with my weight loss.

Applying Occam's razor, try to determine the most likely cause of the problem. If you're actively.trying.to add muscle, are you certain that you're getting enough calories? If you're doing a lot of intense cardio and not eating enough it's going to be difficult to.add muscle. Do you have a specific weight training routine?

This should always be the first response on every thread.

Well, I am limiting myself to about 1500 cal a day. I'm going to try to up it little by little. My concern is that I don't want to start packing on fat- Will make it difficult for me to manage my diabetes. So, based on your suggestions, a slow titration, perhaps increasing my caloric intake-about hundred calories per day, and stopping at 2000 cal, keeping the calories coming primarily from complex carbohydrate and protein and a limited amount of fat may be a way to go.
    Thank you both!
