Honestly, the thought of trying to run is kind of scary since I haven't had to run since high school. I would love to tone my legs while I lose weight and as a goal, I want to do a 5K that is scheduled in November. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Get fitted for proper shoes. I didn't straight away, and god, did my feet hurt. And yes, C25K is awesome for beginners. That's how I started, and I'm doing my first 5k beginning of October - good luck!

    Agreed, C25K!! I am just finishing up C210K and I am running further and harder than I ever DREAMED possible. The C25K program is by the same people and sounds like it was made for you!!

    C25K = couch to 5K. It's an excellent program for non-runners to be running a full 5K in about 9 weeks. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

    If you have a Smart Phone there are apps you can use which will help you with this program.

    ETA: If you notice that your knees, ankles or feet hurt, immediately go to a running store and be fitted for the right running shoe for you. Also, be sure to rest every other day as prescribed by the program. Your weight bearing joints will thank you.

    Get the C25K app on your phone if you have a smart phone. Also would recommend my tracks. It tells you how fast you are going, how far you went and lots of other cool stuff. Good shoes,,,,,pay the money. C25K is the best. The application on the phone actually lets you play your tunes in the background and then it dings when its time to switch from walking to running. I'm really liking this app the most!

    Get properly fitted shoes (and socks...no cotton or you'll end up with blisters), start C25K or a similar program, while at the running store look for running groups that meet weekly. Also...keep in touch with other runners either locally or here on MFP...they'll keep your moral up.
    If you need a dose of inspiration pick up a book by Dean Karnazes...his books always keep me going. I hope to run an ultra one day...and if he can do it, so can I.
