Took me about 6 months to lose the last 10, and after slacking off over the holidays and the general stress of life I'm back up 7 of those. But I think once the warmer weather hits it will fall off again. In reality I wanted to see the goal number at least once and then I was fine with just maintaining in a 5 pound range. It's just that I've been 2-3 pounds over that range for the past 2-3 months, and if I don't get back down I'm afraid it will just continue to creep upwards.
So the last 10- here is what I did that helped- changed up my exercise routine- just did different things; I also raised the intensity and started doing a lot of intervals. I started watching macros and I also only ate half of my exercise calories back (before I could eat most back). I stopped with the BLTs (bites, licks and tastes). Those can really add up, especially if you come home, you're very hungry and start making dinner- at least I tend to have a bite of this and that. To help stop with that I would eat something high protein before a workout and something high in fiber as well (such as a cheese stick and an apple). And then finally to lose those last 5 pounds I stopped eating back any of my exercise calories.
I will say that maintenance has been a bit tricky. I started eating back exercise calories once I got to my goal, thinking that "well now I should just maintain" but no, I lost 3 more pounds over a week or two without really trying. So it's been a juggling act- I'm just trying to stay with overall generally healthy choices, but sometimes it gets hard when the stress of life kicks in and you start to slip back into old habits. I think the key is to know that for someone like me I just have to keep an eye on it and then if I get over my "maintenance range" I will go back to a deficit (which is what I'm trying to do now).5
