A lot of people who have to do big physical tests or events tell me that they like to "carb load" before.

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal stories for this? Yay or nay?

I think you mean carb load (do you?)

there are different schools of thought - I know I can't do a huge pasta dinner the night before - but I do up my weekly carb intake by 20-30 in the week leading up

    Carb load, not carb bloat.

Well, not unless it's the initial weigh-in for a weightloss competition.

You consume extra carbs a day or two before the event. It theoretically gives you more readily available energy to use.

Thank you for correcting me with my terminology.

So don't go crazy with it, just up it by a slight amount like below 50?

Below 50? Grams, total? That would be worthless. Adding 50 grams to what you're already eating? Maybe. But, no - carb loading typically means eat a large pasta dish or even dessert or something. We're talking hundreds of grams of carbs, typically.
