I am going out to eat tonight and I would really like to have Ethakka Appam or Banana Fritters. (made with Plantain Bananas) does anyone have any idea how many calories are in these I am getting everything from 50 calories to 400. I don not think they could possibly 400 a pop. But how many calories they are determine if I am allowed to have one or two. Any clue.

A banana fritter could easily have 400 calories as it's fried.
Have no idea on the other item as I do not know what it even is.0 -
It is the same thing basically Plantains are a specific breed of bananas they are small. Ethakka Appam is the Indian name for Plantain Fritters. Which are basically banana fritters but smaller.0

Bananas and plantains have alot of cal for some reason, and yes to fry them will only make it worse. not to mention the sauce they will serve with it. you would be about the same with the Ethakka Appam, especialy if it is being fried in cocnut oil.0

is it battered and deep fried? If so it will be a lot of fat and calories.0

Thanks! Good to know.
But yes, something battered and deep-fried, even small, is likely to be a calorie nightmare unfortunately.0 -
Well, we have tostones , the spanish version. They're fried green plantains; they're cut in slices, fried once, then flatened, then fried a second time to get them crunchy. You can search under tostones on here.0

If it's battered and fried, never mind all the calories and whatnot but all the sugar in them. I could see them being a high calorie food.0

These are dinfately a treat of the highest order fried and full of fat so if you want them just go for it its about 325 based on the following receipe but hard to say when you are eatting out but I would assume high:-
2 cups mashed bananas
2 cup plain flour
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 cup water0 -

Yeah but one won't kill me, and I can base the rest of my meal size-wise around it if I can figure this out0 -
If you REALLY want them, exercise extra!! Get some extra exercise calories to burn. Just a thought... Like many do for drinking, you make room for it in your diary.0

There are 243 caloriesin 1 pionono of Puerto Rican Style Ripe Plantain ...0
-
nevermind, I just looked up Ethakka Appam and saw it's battered. By the way, I just saw online it's made with ripe plantain, not green.0

Ok so 350 is probably safe, and it will let me have what the other stuff I want for dinner. still higher than I would expect since they are so small. But hey you never know0

There are 111 calories in 1 Banana Fritter. Hope this helps..0

http://hubpages.com/hub/calories-in-indian-food says that one piece of appam is 141.5 calories. I'm assuming the idea is you can appam lots of things because it didn't specify ethakka or anything else. Sorry, I don't know alot about Indian food overall, just trying to help.0

lol even now no one agrees still anywhere from 150-400, I guess assume high. Better to be under than over. Tostones are pretty agreed on and they are 150, and they are probably closer to the indian verision, still moving on...0

Plantain is NOT smaller than a banana. Actually the other way around.
I know Jamaica food, they fry the plantain in oil.
I would assume that calories range from 50-400 because it would depend on, if your having ONE piece, or a serving.
From left to right: plantains, red bananas, Spanish bananas (small and sweet) and the typical supermarket banana, or Cavendish banana0 -
I stay away from battered stuff. If I give in I will only want more and it will make all the food i currently eat that is tasty seem bland and boring. Food affects us just like a drug so beware, if you have a food addiction then this might open up a Pandora's box for you.0

I am not terribly worried about that. As long as I plan it before I go I stay in calories, doesn't matter about starting eating fried food. Now if I was drinking that is Pandora's Box, but eating...it'll be fine. The only time I get in trouble when I go out to eat is when I don't think about it before it. Works for me!0 -

Lol, you are right I am totally wrong. I stand corrected. Yeah but when they say one serving they don't tell me how big a serving is. So I will order 1 order, and give Jenna 3, she loves them so it'll work. Better safe than sorry0 -
Never knew going out to eat can be so complicated huh LOL...Enjoy!0

Makes me glad i cant afford to eat out0
