I started using this system in late January. So far it has really helped me to see what I have been consuming. I thought I was doing a good job and found out I was way over the top. I live in South Dakota and most of the winter is pretty cold and since there is not much else to do, eating can get out of hand. Kernit

Welcome! I see you have been doing a great job so far! That's wonderful!0

Yes, I have had some good success with this deal. I am a former long distance runner and found out that I had colon cancer about six year ago. I have always been a big guy but I was able to do a lot of running and keep my weight under control. During my chemo process I had to take a lot steroids and this cause my weight to really go up. I have been fighting to get it back down ever since. Also, given the fact that I am getting older and it is not as easy to go out and run like I used to has added to my issues. I would like to drop about 35 pounds and then go from there.0

Did you beat the cancer? My mom had colon cancer 10 years ago and beat it as well. I understand what you had to go through and my heart goes out to you. My mom has third degree burns to her kidneys and other places that will forever torture her throughout her life. I hope the process has been kinder to you.:flowerforyou:0

Welcome! I'm from SD too. Cabin fever makes me want to snack all day long too. Unfortunately, to combat the munchies I've started overdoing the diet Coke. I hope it warms up soon so we can go outside again. I am even sick of walking around the mall. Good luck!0

Yes I have beat is so far. But I will you tell that was a learning experience. The old adage about some things are not as important as one thinks they are. I see life in a much different way now. But thanks for asking.0

That's great. I am eternally grateful for all God has given me.0

Here is a question? Are there good calories and bad calories? From what I am reading it appears that most diets lead a person away from foods that are high in starch: South Beach = low sugar, Atkins = low carbs, etc. So is one better off eating calories from low start or not? Does it make any difference?0

Hi
From what little I understand...there are good and bad calories. There are "good" calories in nutritionally dense foods such as vegetables, fruit, nuts and beans, etc... Then there are "empty" calories that are found in things like junk food and soda. The things is is that you want to get as many nutrionally healthy foods ie fruits, vegeteables, etc.. into your diet as you can. Hope this helps!0 -
So what about the difference between protein calories and carb calories?0
-
Some carbs such as white bread, sugar and even white potatoes can quickly raise blood sugar in your body and result in carb cravings so you want to stay away from those as much as possible. The good carbs are whole grain breads (the fiber prevents the quick spike of insulin), vegetables (other than white potatoes) and fruits.
Proteins are meats, cheeses and other dairy products. They keep you full longer and therefore you eat less. Be sure that the protein is lean and low fat dairy products. Most diets recommend a lean protein of some sort at every meal.0 -
Welcome aboard!
I know what you mean about the cold -- I'm in AK.
You've gotten some great replies to your questions so I won't rehash all of that. I try to keep my own diet very simple with whole foods. I try to read the labels and if I can't easily pronouce all the ingredients I look for a healthier substitute. I'm far from perfect with this plan but I'm making progress.
Best of luck :flowerforyou:0
