What to do with the kids' rooms?
My husband and I just moved to a new 3-bedroom house with our 7 year-old boy and 9 year-old girl. One of the kids' bedrooms is obviously bigger and better than the other one. Our daughter is starting to have slumber parties, and friends over to study and hang out, and I want to encourage that. Then I will know who her friends are, and what they are into. Our son is more of an introvert, and prefers doing things in the backyard when he does have friends over. It would make more sends to give the bigger room to our daughter becz she has people over more, but I don't want our son to feel short-changed. I'm trying to think of something that we can do for him so that he doesn't feel left out or neglected. He's too young to really understand "taking it for the team", although that will come later.
Any ideas?

Are you really sure he'd even care? I'm not saying he won't notice, but maybe that he just wouldn't feel short-changed by it. Have they had their own rooms before this? Anyway, if you think he'll care, tell him you'll build him a loft bed. My kids are nuts over them. They look simple enough and it'll make his room seem roomier.

Older kid gets the bigger room. When she goes to college, he can have the big room. This plan has been working for centuries, so don't mess with it! LOL
Maybe put a loft bed in the smaller room though, so you can put his desk below it and give him more floor space for the times he does want to play in his room?0 -
Give him the smaller room, but help trick it out with him to make it extra spiffy. He might not even care that it's smaller.0

Oh my goodness! That's brilliant! It would be like his own tree fort (minus the tree).
Thanks!!!0 -

I think you're right ... that might work!0 -

My parents never heard of this rule, my younger sister took the bigger room in the last 3 houses we lived in. :explode:
I also like the loft idea. I have seen them in stores where the bottom is a desk and the bed up top.0 -
We recently talked my step daughter into swapping her bigger room with her younger brother's smaller room. The reason being she does nothing but sit on her butt reading a book or watching tv whilst he spreads his Lego etc all over the floor making up games. Once we explained why and did a little bribery with new curtains and a new chest of drawers she was fine with it. Mind you they dont live here permanently only alternate weekends and Tuesdays so that may make a huge difference.0

It could even be a project he does with his Dad. He would probably make more work than he would help with, but I'm sure it would be something they would both remember.
Thank you so much!0
